This pattern has taken me 2 months to make and refine. I must admit that I did plenty of other things while “working” on the pattern, but even so, of all my patterns this one has taken the longest. I love how it turned out, though, and hope that you enjoy making it!
The first 6 rounds of Sophie’s Mandala were heavily inspired by Chris Simon’s Lace Petals Square, so before I could even think about publishing this pattern, I had to get Chris’ permission to use her centre. Luckily, she agreed!

Love the pattern.
To save others, could you put a warning before row 20 that the fptr is becoming a fpdtr. It is really easy to miss in the print (but obvious later when it curls up badly in row 23).
Dedri Uys says
Thank you, Cherry. I am just working up another one, so I will have a look when I get there. I think the fpdtr is in bold already, but I will see what I can do.

The mandela is so beautiful. I have tried twice to make it and have failed.
I’ve counted and counted to make sure each row had the correct number of stitches.
Even so, it just doesn’t come out right.
Here’s hoping others have better luck than I did.
Dedri Uys says
Hi Betsy.
I am sorry to hear that you are having problems with the pattern. If you can give me more specific details about where things are going awry I can try to help you diagnose the problem. The pattern has been tested thoroughly and is definitely correct. D
Sue Williams says
Love the Garden. Would it be suitable in multiples for a baby blanket? Is the back neat enough or would it need lining?
Dedri Uys says
Sue, that all depends on how neatly you work away your tails of yarn (there are A LOT and you might want to use a lining instead of working away tails too neatly). The desing itself is very neat on the back.

Hi Dedri,
finished my first Sophie’s Garden yesterday and it was great fun. Thanks for sharing this wonderful pattern with us.
Now I have seen you mention that this pattern will replace 4 squares of the CAL, should we choose to use it, which I would very much like. However, the mandala is round and I wonder if there’s a pattern or tutorial that tells me (and of course others) how to turn it into a square. I have seen a few people using it for a square cushion, which is also an alternative, wonderful idea I’m considering.
So if you could let us not so professional ones know how to get it square, that would be wonderful! Thanks very much in advance.
Dedri Uys says
Hi Petra. You can find the squaring up instructions HERE. They will tell you how to make Sophie’s Mandala into Sophie’s Garden.
Petra says
I’m sorry, I figured it out – it’s the Sophie’s Garden Square. All good!

Thank you sooooo much for the inspiration. I used like 85% of your pattern to create a cover for this piano stool.

Cookie says
I love this pattern. I am confused on the number of patterns. Are there 3 different patterns: Sm, Med, Lrg? Or is the large an extended version of the medium, the medium an extended version of the small….. Or should I just do them all?
Thanks for your help.
Dedri Uys says
Cookie, hi. It is one pattern, broken up into 3 parts. There are optional ending rounds at the end of each part so that you can finish the mandala off at that point. I suggest starting with the small and seeing how you like it. If it’s not your cup of tea you can always just finish the small. If, however, you like it and want to continue, skip the rounds that say (Small Version Only) and continue on with the instructions for the medium, and so on, and so forth :)

How many different colors did you use for this? I’ve been trying to count but I don’t think i’m seeing the colors right.

Hi Viv. Round 18 does start 2 st’s before the fpdc which “caught” the picot in the previous round, placing the popcorn stitch above the picot. I love the bag you made using this mandala. Very creative :)

Could this one be made into a square? I’d love to make an afghan using this mandala
Dedri Uys says
Hi Kelly. That is what I am working on at the moment. It is proving a bit of a tough one, but I am getting there :)
