Olive the Crochet Octopus Puzzle is the latest in my Amigurumi Amish Puzzle Animal series (Amamani for short). She is based on my FREE Crochet Amish Puzzle Ball Pattern, and as such comes apart into 3 segments that have to be assembled or “built” to form an octopus.
Once built (and provided you use the suggested yarn and hook), she is about 12 cm in diameter, making her perfect for little hands to grab hold of! And the limitless colour options mean that you can make your crochet octopus as unique and as crazy as you want.
The puzzle itself is fairly simple. But if you’ve never built a puzzle ball, it might take you a while to get your head around it.
My friend, Pam Perkins, made a tiny version using #10 crochet thread and a 1.5 mm crochet hook. She sent me these cute pictures of Olive trying to eat Skillie the crochet turtle. They made me giggle, so I am sharing them.
This pattern is suitable for beginners, but you will want some experience of working in the round and increasing/decreasing.
If you are at all unsure and want to do a dummy run first, try making my Crochet Amish Puzzle Ball. You will soon notice that the only difference between the puzzle ball and the octopus is that one of the segments of the octopus contains a head.
Crochet Octopus Puzzle Pattern
You can find the free pattern (PDF) here on Ravelry.
Extra points for you if you share a picture of your completed octopus puzzle on my facebook page or add it as a Ravelry project.
Update 15/6/2013: I have now updated the pattern with additional photos. Hopefully this will make it easier for those of you who have never made the Crochet Amish Puzzle Ball or any of the Amamani.

There is a mistake in the printed PDF. pattern. On page 2 under Wedge Lids, it shows only 10 rows of the instructions. Further down that page, it says to repeat rows 1-14 – 3 more times.
When I checked your other patterns, you did have it say 14 rows for the ‘lids’.
Someone goofed. Please correct.
Thank you for some great patterns that I hope to be able to try as soon as I finish some other projects.

Manya, the instructions are in 2 columns. if you look in the right-hand column, just under heading for “Lids” and just above the photo, you will see the instructions for Rows 11 – 14.

Thank you for this tutorial! I made this for a 1 year old girl who likes it but doesn’t know how to put it together yet. It will be nice also after some time! I posted a story of my octopus in my blog http://helmelliset.blogspot.fi/2014/01/joulunpunaisia-lahjoja.html and I also added a link to your page. I really like the animals that you make!

That is AWESOME!!!!! He has given me the incentive to finish my ufo’s! I’ve promised myself no more new projects until they are all done!! Thankfully there are only 5!!!
Dedri Uys says
For every one thing I finish I abandon 4! I am hopeless. I once resorted to putting all unfinished projects in their own little bags along with the needed novelties and equipment…I very quickly ran out of crochet hooks and still can’t find my 6mm hook and half of my bobbins and thread. Bad idea!

Once again you blow my mind Dedri. I love the octopus! Where do you get your ideas? Do you just get up one morning and say hey, I think I’ll design an octopus puzzle ball today!? And then you do it…? How long does it take you to design one? I am very intrigued!!!! : )
I think your designs are super cool and I will eventually get around to making every single one of them. I have two more grandbabies due this year!!!
Thank you by the way…you are quite an inspiration!
