Olive the Crochet Octopus Puzzle is the latest in my Amigurumi Amish Puzzle Animal series (Amamani for short). She is based on my FREE Crochet Amish Puzzle Ball Pattern, and as such comes apart into 3 segments that have to be assembled or “built” to form an octopus.
Once built (and provided you use the suggested yarn and hook), she is about 12 cm in diameter, making her perfect for little hands to grab hold of! And the limitless colour options mean that you can make your crochet octopus as unique and as crazy as you want.
The puzzle itself is fairly simple. But if you’ve never built a puzzle ball, it might take you a while to get your head around it.
My friend, Pam Perkins, made a tiny version using #10 crochet thread and a 1.5 mm crochet hook. She sent me these cute pictures of Olive trying to eat Skillie the crochet turtle. They made me giggle, so I am sharing them.
This pattern is suitable for beginners, but you will want some experience of working in the round and increasing/decreasing.
If you are at all unsure and want to do a dummy run first, try making my Crochet Amish Puzzle Ball. You will soon notice that the only difference between the puzzle ball and the octopus is that one of the segments of the octopus contains a head.

Extra points for you if you share a picture of your completed octopus puzzle on my facebook page or add it as a Ravelry project.
Update 15/6/2013: I have now updated the pattern with additional photos. Hopefully this will make it easier for those of you who have never made the Crochet Amish Puzzle Ball or any of the Amamani.

Thank you for this free pattern. I have made it for my granddaughter and although I am not very experienced in crochet I found it very easy to make. I am going to buy your book to have a go at the other animals.

Love your pattern & envy your creativity! Thank you for sharing!! One question, tho … I noticed the legs seem to have a running stitch of light-colored thread emanating from the underside of Olive out to all the tips (?) of her tentacles. Why? I can’t seem to find directions to for doing this step. Did I miss something? Was it done to help keep the tentacles curly or for visual effect or yet some other reason? Thanks in advance for your response!

I believe it was just wire threaded through the arms to position Olive for dramatic effect in the photographs Cheryl.
