Sophie’s Mandala {Medium} is sister to Sophie’s Mandala {Small}. This crochet mandala would look great as a wall-hanging (attached to an embroidery hoop) or squared up (if you are feeling adventurous).

Instructions
Rounds 1 – 8
Follow the instructions for Part 1 of Sophie’s Universe.
Rounds 9 – 15
Follow the instructions for Part 2 of Sophie’s Universe.
Round 16 {Medium Version Only}
If you are going to use the same colour, sl st into the next st and then ch 2 (this counts as your first hdc).
If you are going to use a different colour, start with a standing half-double crochet in the st after the sl st join.
Hdc in the next 2 sts. The last hdc should fall in the second sc worked into the ch-6 space (Photo 1).
*Sc in the next 2 sts (Photo 2). Sc in the second ch of the picot from Round 13 (Photos 3 and 4). Sc in the last 2 sc in the ch-6 space (Photo 5). Hdc in the next 3 sts (Photo 6), dc in the next 3 sts (Photo 7), hdc in the next 3 sts. The last hdc should fall in the second sc worked into the ch-6 space (Photo 8).*
Repeat from * to * 11 times, omitting the last 3 hdc on the last repeat. Join to the top of the beginning ch-2 (or the standing hdc) with a sl st. Fasten off and work away your ends.
Stitch count: 168 sts {60 sc, 72 hdc, and 36 dc}
Round 17 {Medium Version Only}
Start in any stitch around with a standing single crochet. Make a crab stitch in each st around. If you are not familiar with the crab stitch (reverse single crochet), see this video tutorial. When you get to the end of the round, make a crab stitch in the same stitch as the standing single crochet. No need to join with a sl st. Just fasten off and work away your ends.
Stitch count: 168 Crab Stitches

Jenny says
Chris, you can do whatever you wish with Sophie’s garden. Have you seen the CAL? Check out Sophie’s Universe! :)

Any tips for weaving in the ends on a project like this? With all the color changes and lacy parts it has been difficult to hide the ends. Thanks.
Dedri Uys says
LaTonia, on the lacy bits, I work the tails of yarn down the back of one of the stitches in the previous round (by sewing into the back bumps of the stitch that form on the back of the post, if that makes sense). I keep working them “down” until I get to a solid round and then I work them away as normal into the solid round. I hope that jumbled message makes sense. I haven’t had my coffee yet!
LaTonia says
I think I got it. Thanks!
Jill B says
I was wondering if you could tell me what you did for the last round on the tutorial mandala. I really like it. It looks just like sc, but I’d appreciate confirmation!
Dedri Uys says
Jill, do you mean the one at the very end? It is the same as Round 16 in the tutorial, except that all the stitches are hdc’s (so no dc’s)
Louise says
Hi Dedri, I am a relatively new comer to your sight and I have to say I am really enjoying the experience, your one very talented lady and I love your patterns.
Please,please,please can you tell me what the yarn and colours are that you have used in Round 9 Above. They are gorgeous. I think they are also the colours used in some of your tutorials for the CCC CAL. I would be eternally grateful to you.
Thank you once again for the brilliant patterns and colour schemes
Be good to yourself and Blessed Be to your Loved Ones x
Dedri Uys says
Hi Crafty Louise :) Do you want just the colour for round 9, or all the colours up to round 9?
Carol D says
Thank you so much for your work – and sharing, Dedri. I just finished my Sophie’s Mandala last nigrht…hope to block it tonight…this was so fun to do! I loved the challenge of it and feel like I learned so much from doing this project! Now I have to figure out what I’m going to do with it. I used a worsted wt yarn – Red Heart Super Saver (except for one color in second round) – and used H hook. My mandala is about 22 in. around! thinking of a pillow, but because of the size, will have to make my own pillow form! (more challenge!) Now trying to decide if I want to put a fabric or crochet for the back. I’ll post a pic (either tonight or tomorrow) on the CCC Facebook page. So happy with this one….can’t help but smile every time I look at it.
Thank you again! Bless your sharing heart Dedri!
Love you!
Dedri Uys says
