I know there are a few of you who have been patiently (and impatiently) waiting for the pattern for Sophie’s Garden, so I am excited and relieved to finally share it with you.
The example above was made using 2 strands of Stylecraft Special Dk and a 5.5 mm hook. You can now find a list of the colours I used HERE.
Although this is not officially part of the Block a Week CAL 2014, I know there are a few ladies who are wanting to incorporate this square into their blankets. If you wish to do so, remember to use the same hook and yarn as for the rest of your squares and it will come out the same size as 4 of the other squares.
Have fun! I am off to eat some Chinese and have me a big glass of wine!!

8 rows and 18 st’s per 4” (10 cm) square.
Size
19” (48 cm) in diameter.
Materials
- 4 mm crochet hook (US G/6 UK 8)
- Worsted weight yarn or double knit yarn (light worsted weight) – approx. 450 meters/500 yards
- Yarn Needle
Different sizes
- Using a gauge of 7 rows and 16 st’s per 4” (10 cm) square, your final size will be roughly 22” (56 cm). I get this gauge by using a 5.5 mm crochet hook (US 9/I UK 5) and worsted weight yarn.

Hi Dedri – I saw an example of Sophie’s Garden at our local county fair in Howard County, Maryland (outside of Washington, DC). It was made by a 16 year old and was STUNNING – and won grand champion!!! Needless to say, I would like to try my hand at it but am utterly overwhelmed by all of the links, tutorials, etc. the book is not available on Amazon US – Help!!! I just want the traditional pattern and materials list so I can get going. I am an intermediate/advanced crochet level (but not with the web!).
Dedri Uys says
Hi Lisa. The book is available from Wool Warehouse and Deramores. Both ship internationally.
But the free instructions are not that hard to follow at all. Just read through the information post so that you know what you need to know before you start (most importantly that you need to start with a smaller hook and then go up to a bigger hook at the starts of part 4 and 8). Then go to the list of parts at the bottom of that post and click on Part 1 and start, using whatever scrap yarn you have available!
This pattern is all about embracing learning and telling your story through this crochet journey. So for you, the journey will include learning to navigate web patterns, but if you give it a try, it will open up a whole new online world of patterns to you! Please have a go :) And if you struggle, use the contact me button to send me an email and I will help you more x

Hi Dedri
Sure, I’ve already seen it.
Hugs
Love you!
Dedri Uys says
Great :)
Kathy Jacob says
I am sorry but could u tell me where to locate the pattern for Sophie’s garden is thanks
Dedri Uys says
Hi Kathy. You can make Sophie’s Garden by following Parts 1 to 4 of Sophie’s Universe HERE. You can disregard the note about starting with a smaller hook if you are only going to make the garden. It only applies if you want to continue to make the Universe.
Adriana Alcayaga says
Hi Dedry
Both Blanket are gorgeous!
I´m asking how did Betty do to achieve Sophie size 24″x24″ and finally total Stitch Counts between 240 & 248 st’s. (60-62 per side) To join to 2 blocs per side.
Sophie Garden is 36 rounds, at the Round 36 it´s 84 st’s per side-
In small size is (3’3 x 3’3)
using 4 Ply (#2) yarn.
So if the 44 others blokcs I made are 12″x12″ using Worsted Weight Yarn
How can I do to join Sophie at the center of the blanket?
Thaks so much for your anwer.
Hugs & Kisses from Mexico.
Adriana Alcayaga
PD: (I´m not native speaking english, so sorry if I fail writting)
Dedri Uys says
Hi Adriana.
I am sure you have already seen my comment on Facebook, but in case you haven’t, I will repeat it here. For the block a week both Betty and I added additional rounds to each square to get them to the same size as the first square. Each square will have 41 or 42 st’s per side after adding the additional rounds, and then 4 of them will equal one Sophie’s Garden. I hope that makes sense.
You can find the additional rounds HERE.
Cynthia Ford says
First of all thank you for the detailed pattern! I was looking on Pinterest for a “readers wrap” pattern . . .saw this and am in love. I am thinking I can join “4” squares as I see the measurements run around 17-20 x 60-70. Any thoughts or suggestions ??
Smile All Day, Cindy
Dedri Uys says
Hi Cynthia. Are you wanting to make a wrap with the 4 squares, or a blanket? And when you say 60-70, do you mean inches and where did you see that measurement?

I have been trying to get the complete pattern for Sophie’s garden choice. I started the afghan up to the eight row, how do I get whole pattern? Is the a phone number I can call to order? Please let me know a sap.
Dedri Uys says
Hi Doris. The pattern for Sophie’s Garden is available HERE as Parts 1 – 4 of Sophie’s Universe. If you scroll down to the bottom of the site, you will find a link for each part.
Beth says
Thinking about incorporating crocodile flower motif with mandala square. I think it would be a beatiful modified square. That are your thoughts?
Dedri Uys says
Hi Beth.
It works really well if you incorporate Crocodile Flower into the mandala. Courtney Laube has created the ‘Enchanted Garden Tote’ that does exactly that. You can find it on Ravelry HERE.
Annelene says
I made 2 scatter cushion covers ftom this pattern. Just rearranged some of the rows. Stunning
Renee says
Hello,
I started crocheting a Sophie’s Garden but. I only used one strand of yarn.. I see from yours that they look thicker. Do you think it will matter very much using the one strand? I do plan on making another one and I will use two strands then.
Thanks
Dedri Uys says
Hi Renee. I only used 2 strands because I didn’t have a suitable worsted weight alternative, only dk yarn. You can make it in any yarn/hook combination you fancy.
MJ, the SKEINdinavian says
Hello Dedri,
I was not looking for crochet when looking on Pinterest. However your STUNNING Mandala caught me quite by surprise so I had to research it. It is nothing short of AMAZING!
You have done an excellent job on your tutorial and photos. I cannot wait to shop, AGAIN… though I do not have space for more stash. Oh dear!
Thank you so much for making the pattern and instructions available for free. I sincerely appreciate that.
HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Just one thing,
Can I share this pattern on my blog as translated in Koren for so many knitters here(South Korea)? If you are okay, I will go on.
Thanks a lot.

Maryanne says
Thank you for the beautiful pattern, I am using up leftovers from other projects and have a pretty baby blanket in the making, pastels from cream through yellow, green, blue, lilac to pink. I considered myself a beginner as I had only done simple stitches before, but this is really interesting and my skills are improving. 30 rows done and I will have to look at the Sophie’s Universe idea to finish it off.
Dedri Uys says
Well done for taking it on, Maryanne. I like the way most complex stitches are just simple stitches with a twist. I think that you can do any stitch combination if you know how to ch, sc, hdc, dc, and tr.
