I know there are a few of you who have been patiently (and impatiently) waiting for the pattern for Sophie’s Garden, so I am excited and relieved to finally share it with you.
The example above was made using 2 strands of Stylecraft Special Dk and a 5.5 mm hook. You can now find a list of the colours I used HERE.
Although this is not officially part of the Block a Week CAL 2014, I know there are a few ladies who are wanting to incorporate this square into their blankets. If you wish to do so, remember to use the same hook and yarn as for the rest of your squares and it will come out the same size as 4 of the other squares.
Have fun! I am off to eat some Chinese and have me a big glass of wine!!

Oh how I wish I had found Sophie’s Garden when the first post was started. How fun it would have been to go through this pattern weekly with everyone. This won’t stop me from making Sophie’s Garden, but it would have been a great experience.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge and skill.

Dedri Uys says
Judy, you can still have a lot of fun with Sophie, even if you are just starting out. In fact, if you share on Instagram or tag me in anything, I am probably more likely to see your post and be able to help you now (one on one) than when the CAL was ongoing. So don’t be disheartened. Be encouraged!
Jenny says
I agree with Dedri, Kay!
There are still lots of people starting Sophies on the CCCSocial Group Facebook page and plenty there to share your journey with :)
Heidi says
Judy, I have just started Sophie myself. I want to make the CAL 2014 and loved the look with Sophie in the middle.

I’d like to download your Spphie’s Garden pattern. Do you have a version that will run on a MAC? I’m so disappointed at being excluded from getting this wonderful patternn
Dedri Uys says
Bonita, both Preview and Adobe Acrobat can open pdf files on a MAC. If you save the pattern as a pdf by using the print-friendly bottom in the bottom right corner after the post, you will be able to open it on your MAC.

First, I apologize, if this is a double post, but I did not see it come up. Secondly, thank you so much for this labor of love. My question is could you tell me how many skeins of each color to purchase of the Stylecraft DK color scheme. I am anxious to order yarn and get started on this beautiful project.

Absolutely beautiful. I wonder though, has anyone done this in a single color?I bet with the right yarn it would be lovely.
Jenny says
Hannah, I am doing two in single colours and they look fabulous :) You can see my Sophie in the posts to the page I think. If not I will add one, but it is definitely blossoming on the CCC FB page :) Jenny

I made it out of white crochet thread while I was waiting for the yarn to arrive. The white thread turned out to be just a tad over 9 inches. . My yarn arrived three days ago and I am on. Round 31. I am in hopes of making two and making two pillows for the sofa. . I would like to take this opportunity to Thank You for making the pattern available and I have to mention how much the pictures helped. .
Dedri Uys says
Thank you John. Am I correct in assuming that you are, in fact, John, and not his wife? I am always tickled to hear from men who crochet. My husband is making his first giant granny blanket, but it is slow going and I have to bribe him every now and then :)

I am so impressed with this beautiful ‘garden’. Thank you for sharing this with us and in such detail.
I am really a novice crocheter and this is something to aim for, especially as I will be able to refer to such clear instructions.
I didn’t realise this was possible
Dedri Uys says
Thank you, Joy. If you take it step-by-step it is very doable. Good luck :)

I have just finished my ‘sophies garden’ complete with squaring up and flowers. It is beautiful and I love, love, love the fact that I could do it. I am probably an intermediate level crocheter and I learned to do popcorn stitches with this blanket. Thank you so much for the photo tutorial and for the patterns. They are so well written and explained I can’t wait to start the next one!
Dedri Uys says
Thank you for your wonderful feedback, Tracey!
Penny Davis says
Wow i am going to try this, most of the stitches are all new to me but your photo tutorials make it seem less daunting :D You must be so proud to have this feature in so many of the CCC CAL this year without it even being one of the “official” CAL blocks. I know that is what inspired me to try it.
Dedri Uys says
Hi Penny. I am extremely proud of Sophie and the way people have responded to her has touched me deeply. I love the feel-good factor of people being able to make her despite initially thinking that she’s above their skill-level. I hope you do make one!
Penny Davis says
Well I started one in December but I had a grandson arrive early and ended up frogging it……… But I didnt give up I have finished the Mandala as part of this years CAL and am pre-reading through the Squaring it up section ready for next week…..
Just loving it and I intend to make some Sophies Mandala doilies and Sohpies Garden cushions to create the entire Sophies Universe in my room.
Thanks again for all the hard work and effort you put into everything you do, You have helped me grow from a self taught above average beginner to an Intermediate skilled crocheter….
