I know there are a few of you who have been patiently (and impatiently) waiting for the pattern for Sophie’s Garden, so I am excited and relieved to finally share it with you.
The example above was made using 2 strands of Stylecraft Special Dk and a 5.5 mm hook. You can now find a list of the colours I used HERE.
Although this is not officially part of the Block a Week CAL 2014, I know there are a few ladies who are wanting to incorporate this square into their blankets. If you wish to do so, remember to use the same hook and yarn as for the rest of your squares and it will come out the same size as 4 of the other squares.
Have fun! I am off to eat some Chinese and have me a big glass of wine!!

Gauge
Using worsted weight yarn and dc stitches:
8 rows and 18 st’s per 4” (10 cm) square.
Size
19” (48 cm) in diameter.
Materials
- 4 mm crochet hook (US G/6 UK 8)
- Worsted weight yarn or double knit yarn (light worsted weight) – approx. 450 meters/500 yards
- Yarn Needle
Different sizes
- Using a gauge of 7 rows and 16 st’s per 4” (10 cm) square, your final size will be roughly 22” (56 cm). I get this gauge by using a 5.5 mm crochet hook (US 9/I UK 5) and worsted weight yarn.
- Using a gauge of 6 rows and 14 st’s per 4” (10 cm) square, your final size will be roughly 24” (61 cm). I get this gauge by using bulky yarn and a 6 mm crochet hook (US 10/J UK 4) OR 2 strands of double knit yarn and a 5.5 mm crochet hook (US 9/I UK 5).

Hello,
I want to make twelve squares of Sophie’s Garden using Plymouth Encore medium worsted, 100g/200 yds per skein. I cannot for the life of me do the yarn math to figure out how many skeins OR yards of each color, and was hoping to purchase it all at once. I can’t grasp how the 500 yds total per square divides out of 11 185 yd skeins. Is there anywhere I can find how much of each color goes in this pattern?
Thank you
Jeanie
Jenny Lowman says
Hi Jeanie.
I haven’t come across a chart for grams/metres per colour for Sophie’s Garden. I know on Ravelry, Dedri suggests Scheepjes cahlista which is 50g/85m per ball, and uses up to 457m total.
Maybe have a look at the square on Ravelry and see under the projects if anyone has made one using your chosen yarn?

Good luck!

Hallo Dedri,
Ik kan dit prachtige patroon niet in het Nederlands vinden. Kan je mij helpen?

Hi Jeltje, I am so sorry I’ve just seen this. I have updated the links in the post, so they should work for you now.

Hi,
I have just finished my second “Sophie’s Garden” as a gift. It will be a wall hanging and I’m wondering if I should use some spray starch when I block it in order to help it maintain its shape over time?
Dedri Uys says
It should be fine without a spray starch. As long as you attach the entire top edge to something straight and solid, it shouldn’t cause any issues.

I absolutely love this pattern. I can’t seem to access the list of colours you used in the Stylecraft special dk? Could I get this list please? Thank you so much.
Jenny Lowman says
I am afraid that isn’t available now, but Dedri has the Scheepjes Colour Crafter version here, if that is a help :)

In your opinion, do you think it looks best made with double stranded DK, or single stranded worsted/Aran?
Jenny Lowman says
I have made it with double stranded chunky and it came out lovely! I have also made it with single stranded DK, and Whirl cakes which are finer still.
It all depends on what size you want your finished blanket, really. The Garden square looks fabulous in all types of yarn :)
