I know there are a few of you who have been patiently (and impatiently) waiting for the pattern for Sophie’s Garden, so I am excited and relieved to finally share it with you.
The example above was made using 2 strands of Stylecraft Special Dk and a 5.5 mm hook. You can now find a list of the colours I used HERE.
Although this is not officially part of the Block a Week CAL 2014, I know there are a few ladies who are wanting to incorporate this square into their blankets. If you wish to do so, remember to use the same hook and yarn as for the rest of your squares and it will come out the same size as 4 of the other squares.
Have fun! I am off to eat some Chinese and have me a big glass of wine!!

Different sizes
- Using a gauge of 7 rows and 16 st’s per 4” (10 cm) square, your final size will be roughly 22” (56 cm). I get this gauge by using a 5.5 mm crochet hook (US 9/I UK 5) and worsted weight yarn.

Thank-you for the exquisite pattern Dedri. I’m fairly new to crochet, but I definitely want to try this. Maybe I missed it, but about how large is the finished square?
Again, thank you for sharing!
Dedri Uys says
Hi Carol. Depending on which hook and yarn you choose to use, the square will come out between 19″ and 24″. There is a note at the beginning of the garden tutorial that talks about gauge and size, so you might find that helpful.

Love, Love, LOVE this! And thanks sooo much for all the step-by-step pics! It makes things so much easier to understand, especially for such an elaborate work of art. Thanks so much for sharing!!!

I’ve been searching the web for a spectacular afghan/lapghan pattern to auction off at our yearly Papillon dog rescue auction. This fabulous design is it! I want to increase the outer square in rings of color to make it a larger size. Do you have any other design suggestions for increasing the size? Thanks so much for sharing. I so appreciate your talent.
Dedri Uys says
Hi Barbara. I am working on making Sophie’s Garden into a full-sized afghan, but it’s a big secret project. I have seen many people grow sophie by just adding whatever stitches catch their fancy.
Beverly Curd says
Hi,
Was curious are these pattern instructions in US or UK ?
Thanks so much for the beautiful pattern and the hard work it must have taken to design it.
Fondly,
Bev Curd
Dedri Uys says
Thank you for your comment, Beverly.
This pattern uses US crochet terms. You can find the link to the UK conversion chart right under the heading “abbreviations”.

I have been looking for a project to make for myself. I’m currently making a king size bedspread. Plan to be done with that in time for Christmas. But this square is calling my name as my next project. It is truly breathtakingly beautiful. I had come to look at granny squares as boring and mediocre, but you have totally changed my view. I can’t wait to start this and will be looking for yarns to reproduce your awesome creation. Thank you very much for sharing this for free.
Dedri Uys says
Joyce, I hope you have a lot of fun making her.

I just wanted to thank you so very much for your lovely pattern, I added some bits of other patterns and made this into an afghan. Wanted to share the info with you and thank you again! You can see the afghan at http://www.ravelry.com/projects/danaan/sophies-garden

Sherri, I LOVE how your afghan turned out. Such beautiful colours and stitch choices. I am sure your friend will love it too! If she doesn’t send it to me!!

Helloo,
I was wondering whether there was a diagram for Sophies Garden I am slightly dyslexic and find reading thwe written word a little confusing?
Beautiful pattern and colours I have so many ideas for this I cannot keep me head quiet ha ha
Many thanks
Julia
Dedri Uys says
Hi Julia. Unfortunately I do not have a chart, but if you have a look at the Ravelry projects (can’t remember now if it was small, medium, or large), someone has done a chart and put photos of it up.
Good luck!

Unbelievably wonderful. Hats oof to you. I wish I had the patience.

Oh my gosh! I’m in the middle of a million projects, but I must stop and make this gorgeous square! It’s absolutely mesmerizing. This is my first visit to your site, Dedri, but it won’t be my last. Thank you so much!
Dedri Uys says
You are welcome, Elaine. I’m looking forward to seeing your square :)
Monica Arzuffi says
Dedri Uys says
I am so pleased that you managed to finish it, Monica :)
Carol Derbis says
Hi Dedri! I’ve been arguing with myself if I wanted to finish my Sophies Garden into a square – and I think the square side of me has won!
I have your awesome tutorial, of course. But for some reason am still nervous about going forward. I had no problem getting the Mandala finished (though I did not do the crab stitch (optional) last row. So I counted and re-counted and I have 240 stitches round the mandala now….
So to go forward, can I just start with the present last row? Same number of stitches either way (with or without the crab stitch) so we should be okay, right?
My thought is this: I have a number of grannies made in the blue colorway that I used for Sophies Garden. And I was thinking I could use Sophies as the center of an afghan with my other squares around as a ‘frame’.
Unable to put picture in this form. Curious what you think of this….
By the way, I’ve shared links to your site on several of the crochet group Facebook pages to which I ‘belong’. Someone’s always asking for tutorials for various stitches, techniques, etc. so I let them know the best source is Look At What I Made.
Thank you again for your help so many times. My crochet skills have increased significantly from following your patterns and your tutorials….
I consider it a real accomplishment if I can do one of your patterns without peeking at the tutorials! I’ve put your Amigurami book on my Christmas Wish List as I so want to make several of your puzzle animals for my granddaughter – and after Christmas to donate to local charity store.
Dedri Uys says
Hi Carol.
Thank you so much for the lovely comment. It will be perfectly fine if you skip the crab stitch round as the first round of Squaring UP will be worked into the last round you have just made, not into the crab stitch round. The crab stitch round is purely for surface embellishment. Can’t wait to see how you get on and I am so pleased that you find my tutorials useful x
Robyn Re says
Thank you for sharing this spectacular pattern! I can’t wait to give it a try. Even though it may be tad above my level, I think the photo tutorials will make everything ok!
One question, did you use 1 or 2 strands throughout the project?
Dedri Uys says
Robyn, I used 1 strand throughout for the pale version, and 2 strands throughout for the bright version.
