Gemina the Crochet Giraffe Puzzle
Update July 2014: This pattern is no longer available as a stand-alone pattern. Instead it will soon be available as part of a book by Annie’s Publishing.
It feels like years since I posted my last crochet puzzle pattern (although it has just been a month). And so I am very pleased, to get this Crochet Giraffe Puzzle Pattern out there.
Gemina gets her name from the crooked-necked giraffe of facebook fame. Mainly because I like alliteration, but also because of her asymmetry. Let me explain. This crochet puzzle is the fourth in my Amamani series (Amigurumi Amish Puzzle Animals) and is based on my FREE Crochet Amish Puzzle Ball pattern.
Typically these Amamani are configured differently, or symmetrically if you prefer. But because of Gemina’s loooooong neck, I have had to alter the way she is constructed and assembled. Consequently either her neck or her legs appear asymmetrical, depending on your point of view.
I think this lends to her charm. My husband does not. Be that as it may.
The puzzle consists of 3 segments that can be taken apart and re-assembled at will.
Once “built”, Gemina stands 23 cm high and measures 12 cm from front to back. The chunky design is perfect for little hands and inquisitive minds. And she would make the perfect gift for any young child.
You will need to be comfortable with joining in the round and increasing/ decreasing. It would also help if you are familiar with short rows. Don’t freak out if you aren’t, though, because the short rows are explained as well as I can humanly manage and I will always gladly answer any questions you might have!
If she looks a bit too tricky for you, but you are fascinated by the idea, why don’t you try making my Crochet Amish Puzzle Ball instead?
Once again I would like to thank my superstar testers for testing the crochet giraffe puzzle pattern for me:

I have your book and have made several of the items. However, the giraffe is the first one that has the head on the leg part instead of the circle that holds everything together. This makes the legs off in position. If the head had been in the circle part that holds the legs together, then it would have looked much better. That way you would have had 2 legs in front and 2 in back as should be. The way it is you have 1 leg in front, 1 leg on the left, 1 leg on the right, and 1 leg in back. You may want to rethink this or something. This is just my opinion.

Hi. I am sorry to hear that you are displeased with the way I have designed the giraffe. You are welcome to change the design and add the head to the ‘circle part’. I tried that initially but did not like the way it made the giraffe look more like a llama than a giraffe. I look forward to seeing your revised version :)

I’m having a heard time with the head.
I get everything to the short rows inside and outside and i’ve made three different heads following the directions. And not once have pictures 3 and 4 looked even remotely right.
I have like 8 stitches in between.
Can you advise on how to make the head and neck correct?
Dedri Uys says
Ky, hi,
Can you use the contact me tab at the top of this website to send me an email? I am happy to walk you through the instructions.

I just looked back to the top and saw that the deadline for this was last year in March…I should have read it better before I commented. You might want to change that if you can. Thanks anyway!
Dedri Uys says
Sorry about that, Theresa. I will change it. I didn’t realize that it might still be confusing people. Thank you.

I love the Giraffe and was curious about the jacquard looking one :) is it crocheted out of scock yarn?
Cora says
should’ve said sock yarn…lol :)
Dedri Uys says
Cora, I’m pretty sure she used sock yarn. I have asked her what she used, but no response yet. It is lovely, isn’t it x
