Yes, dear crocheters, I am finally sharing the pattern for my Banksia Baby Blanket with you. I hope you enjoy making it!
This blanket has accompanied me on many adventures and through quite a few trials (I spoke about that – at length – in the WIP post I did two weeks ago), so it is very VERY special to me. I was wondering who I could gift it to, not having a baby of my own anymore, when I realised that my sister-in-law is about to have a baby girl any day now. So even though these are not traditional girl colours, I am going to send this blanket to her. I will pretend that I am holding that baby across the water, and that I am there to hear her snuffly hungry-cries and see her first sleepy wind-smile.

Punctuation
* An asterisk indicates pattern repeats. You will need to repeat all the instructions between asterisks the number of times specified. This is a hard-core repeat and will consist of multiple instructions.
Square Brackets [] indicate repeats. You will need to repeat the instructions between square brackets the number of times specified. This is a lower level repeat.
Parentheses () are used to indicate a group of stitches to be worked into the same stitch/space. Parentheses are also used to indicate a repeat when using square brackets would be too confusing.
Special Stitches
Flower: Ch 3, skip the next 2 sts and sl st in the next st. Ch 8 and sl st in the same st to form a loop. Ch 3 and skip the next 2 sts.
Popcorn – Make 5 dc in the same stitch. Remove your hook from the last stitch. Insert your hook into the first dc of the 5-dc group. Grab the last stitch with your hook and pull it through the first stitch to create the Popcorn.
(FP) Front Post – Identify the post of the stitch you want to work around. Insert your hook from the front to the back and then from the back to the front around the post of the stitch so that the post lies in front of your hook. Complete your stitch as normal.
Notes
- You will turn at the end of every round except for when you make the border! This will ensure that your blanket doesn’t ‘twist’.
- Ch-2 corner spaces are NOT included in the stitch counts.
- I suggest not working away your ends until you have completed the body of the blanket, at which point you can decide which side will be your right side and which will be your wrong side. This will ensure that all your ends are worked away on the same side and your work will be neat.
- For the photo tutorial below, I have used a different colour for each round so that you can better see the stitches and how they interact with previous rounds.

Rounds 12 – 62
Repeat Rounds 9 – 11. See Note below and Information Per Round at the end of the pattern.
When you have finished, fasten off and decide which side will be the front of your blanket. Then work away your ends to the back.
Note
As you are no doubt aware, I am a very tight crocheter. If your gauge is looser than mine, you won’t be able to make all 62 rounds with Yarn A. This is not a cause for concern, though. Each repeat of Round 11 ends on a multiple of 10 + 5 stitches, which is what you will need in order to start the border. As long as you stop on a repeat of Round 11, the border will work out. You can, therefore, make your blanket as big or as small as you like
As a guide, I had 27g Yarn A left at the end of Round 59 (which is the end of the second-to-last repeat). I used 20g to complete Rounds 60 – 62. If you have less than 27g of yarn left at the end of Round 59, I suggest that you stop there. This will not affect the size of the finished blanket as the change in gauge will create a bigger blanket for fewer rounds.
From this point on, you will always be working with the RS always facing you.
Whipsiderry Border
(Of course, it has to have its own name and I felt it deserved a tutorial of its own, which you can find HERE!)
Border Stitch Counts have been supplied for if you stop at the end of Round 59 AND if you stop at the end of Round 62. I have also supplied the maths for figuring out stitch counts when stopping at the end of another repeat (please see Information per Round at the end of this post to figure out the maths). Below you will find the written-only instructions with the relevant stitch counts. If you need photographic help (or the charts), please see THIS tutorial.

Thanks for this pattern Dedri, the instructions and photo tutorial are brilliant. You started me on my crochet journey with your patterns (first Sophie’s Universe and now this) . I just finished making it for my son in Green Tea Tipple and it’s beautiful.
Kerstin says
This is so amazing I really need to make it. In a pink-based whirl for my granddaughter!
I am just wondering about how washable it is? Being a baby blanket it would have to survive quite a few washes I’d think. I’ve never worked with thin yarn like this before so that’s why I’m asking.
Thanks!
Dedri Uys says
Hi Kerstin.
The yarn is surprisingly sturdy for its weight. It washes and wears well :)
Cherie says
This blanket is beautiful! Does anyone have any suggestions on a yarn that would have similar results that’s available in the US?
Dedri Uys says
Wool Warehouse does ship internationally, and quite quickly. I haven’t come across an alternative that works up as nicely (or as snag-free) as Whirl.
Gramcar says
Thank you so much for this lovely pattern.
This is a great afghan for my charity group.
Thanks again,
