I wrote the pattern for these Chunky Crochet Slippers in 2012 (you can see my original versions HERE and HERE). It was one of my first patterns, so it was sorely in need of an update. I am pleased to say that I have now updated the pattern with the help of (my friend, tester, and occasional editor) Venetia Smith.
These crochet slippers work up very quickly. They are also super comfy! Add to that the fact that you can use yarn, plarn (plastic yarn), or t-shirt yarn to make them, and you have the perfect cheap and cheerful project.

Size
UK Size 6/7 {US Size 8.5/9.5}
Gauge
The sole should be 23.5 cm long and 11 cm wide (at the widest part). That is just over 9” long and 4.5” wide. The slippers will stretch in length more than in width.
Additional Size
If you would like to adapt this pattern to fit a UK Size 5 {US Size 7.5}, you can use one strand of Chunky Yarn and a 9 mm hook (US 13/M/N). For this tutorial I have used Scheepjeswol Stonewashed XL.
Your sole should then measure 23 cm long and 10.5 cm wide (at the widest part). That is just under 9” long and just over 4” wide.

Instructions
Before you start you will need to decide if you would like to make single-layer soles or double-layer soles. Once you have decided, follow the relevant instructions below.
Please note that each round spills into the next round by 1 stitch. In other words, your last stitch of each round will fall in the first stitch of the same round. For this reason I strongly advise using stitch markers.
Single-Layer Soles
Make 2
- Ch 15. Working through the top loop only, sc in the second ch from the hook and in the next 5 ch’s. Hdc in the next ch. Dc in the next 5 ch’s. Dc inc in the next ch. Make 4 dc’s in the last chain. Now you are going to work back down the chain, inserting your hook through both remaining loops of each ch st. Dc inc in the next ch. Dc in next 5 ch’s. Hdc in the next ch. Sc in next 5 ch’s. Sc inc in the last ch. {33 st’s}
- Hdc inc in each of the next 2 st’s, marking the first hdc with a stitch marker or a piece of scrap yarn. Hdc in the next 11 st’s. Hdc inc in each of the next 7 st’s. Hdc in the next 12 st’s. Hdc inc in each of the next 2 st’s. Please note that the last hdc inc will fall in the first hdc of the round, which has been marked with a st marker. {45 st’s}
- Sc inc in the next st, marking the first sc with a st marker. Sc in the next st. Sc inc in the next st. Sc in the next 12 st’s. Sc inc in the next st. Sc in the next 4 st’s. Sc inc in each of the next 3 st’s. Sc in the next 4 st’s. Sc inc in the next st. Sc in the next 14 st’s. Sc inc in the next st. Sc in the next st. Sc inc in the next st, which will contain the st marker. Sl st in the next st. Ch 1 and bind off. {54 st’s}
Double-Layer Soles
Make 4
If you are making double-layer soles, you will need to finish 2 soles off as indicated at the end of Round 2. For the other two soles, continue on to Round 3, where you will be given instructions for ‘sandwiching’ the double-layer soles.
- Ch 15. Working through the top loop only, sc in the second ch from the hook and in the next 5 ch’s. Hdc in the next ch. Dc in the next 5 ch’s. Dc inc in the next ch. Make 4 dc’s in the last chain. Now you are going to work back down the chain, inserting your hook through both remaining loops of each ch st. Dc inc in the next ch. Dc in next 5 ch’s. Hdc in the next ch. Sc in next 5 ch’s. Sc inc in the last ch. {33 st’s}
- Hdc inc in each of the next 2 st’s, marking the first hdc with a stitch marker or a piece of scrap yarn. Hdc in the next 11 st’s. Hdc inc in each of the next 7 st’s. Hdc in the next 12 st’s. Hdc inc in each of the next 2 st’s. Please note that the last hdc inc will fall in the first hdc of the round, which has been marked with a st marker. {45 st’s} Complete 2 of the soles as follows: sc in the next st, sl st in the next st, ch 1 and bind off.
- Without removing your hook from the sole, take one of the bound-off soles and place it behind your work (with the right side facing away from you). Working through both layers, insert your hook into the next st of the sole closest to you and into the third stitch from the sl st bind-off on the sole farthest away from you. Complete a sc inc through both layers, marking the first sc with a st marker. Sc in the next st. Sc inc in the next st. Sc in the next 12 st’s. Sc inc in the next st. Sc in the next 4 st’s. Sc inc in each of the next 3 st’s. Sc in the next 4 st’s. Sc inc in the next st. Sc in the next 14 st’s. Sc inc in the next st. Sc in the next st. Sc inc in the next st, which will contain the st marker. Sl st in the next st. Ch 1 and bind off. {54 st’s}
Body of the Slipper
If you are using a single-layer sole, work with the right side of the sole facing you. If you are using a double-layer sole, make sure that the right side of the last round is facing you.
- Join your yarn by making a front post standing half-double crochet around the last sc of the last round (Photo 1). Fphdc in each of the next 52 sc’s. The arrow in Photo 1 indicates the next sc to work in to. Photo 2 illustrates the first of the 52 fphdc’s made. Join to the top of the first hdc with a sl st. Photos 3 – 5 illustrate what this round will look like from the side, top, and bottom. Ch 2 and turn (counts as first dc of the next round). {53 st’s}
- From this point on you won’t turn at the end of a round. The outside of the slipper should always be facing you. Do not accidentally work into the sl st at the base of the ch-2, indicated in the photo below with an arrow. Dc in the first 6 stitches. Hdc in the next 13 st’s. (Dc2tog over the next 2 st’s) three Dc3tog over the next 3 st’s. (Dc2tog over the next 2 st’s) three times. Hdc in the next 13 st’s. Dc in the last 5 st’s. Join to the top of the initial ch-2 with a sl st. {45 st’s, including initial ch-2}
- Ch 2 (counts as first dc). Dc2tog over the next 2 st’s. Do not accidentally work into the sl st at the base of the ch-2. Dc in the next 2 st’s. Hdc in next 13 st’s. Dc2tog x 4. Hdc in next 13 st’s. Dc in next 4. Join to initial ch-2 with a sl st. {39 st’s, including initial ch-2}
- Before making Round 4, decide if you would like to add a button closure or not. If you don’t want to add a button closure, continue on with the instructions for this round. If you would like to include one, see Button and Chain Variation below. Ch 1. Sl st in every st around. When you get to the end, join with an invisible join.
Button and Chain Variation
When working Round 4:
Right: Sl st in the first 12 st’s. Ch 17. Skip the next 3 st’s of Round 3. Sl st in the fourth st and all the stitches around. When you get to the end, join with an invisible join.
Left: Sl st in the first 24 st’s. Ch 17. Skip the next 3 st’s of Round 3. Sl st in the fourth st and all the rest of the stitches around. When you get to the end, join with an invisible join.
Sew a button onto the shoe directly opposite the 3 skipped st’s from Round 4.

Thank you for these fun & amazing slippers! I’m a beginner, so many of the issues I’m experiencing are rookie mistakes (I didn’t know my 2tog stitches as well as I thought, and I wasn’t following your inc instructions properly, despite a very clear key at the top). I’m running into a part that has me confused. In the instructions for the tops, the beginning of #2 says “From this point on you won’t turn at the end of a round. The outside of the slipper should always be facing you.” At the end of #2 it says “chain 2 & turn.” Likewise, at the end of #3 we’re told to chain 1 & turn. Do we turn as instructed, or continue working in the round in the same direction? This is probably obvious to most readers, but as a beginner, it has me confused (thank you for the very clear instructions & pic to avoid the slip stitch space after the chain 2!)

Hi Nicole. Thank you so much for highlighting that. You should not be turning at the end of those two rounds. I am so sorry for this silly oversight. I have now corrected the instructions.

I have a ton of tshirt yarn that I’d love you use for these, but I have giant feet (size 11). Any tips on making them larger?
Dedri Uys says
Amy, due to the design of the slipper it would need re-writing to add extra rounds, so your two options are to either use a larger hook, or to make slippers that are worked toe-to-heel instead, as you can customize how wide and long you want the slipper to be. Have a look at this baby-bootie post. It contains a link to Textured Ballet Slippers, which are hugely comfy!

Hi Dedri!
I just love your patterns and these are no exception. I would love to make them, but I have giant feet. Can you give some pointers on how to make these larger?
Thanks!
Dedri Uys says
Lol…how giant is giant? It will be easier to help you if I know what size I a aiming for :)
Shauna says
I wear a 10.5 U.S. See? Giant!
Thank you!!
Cheers,
Shauna

These are so darn cute with the button!, I’m going to ignore my other wips and make a 7 1/2 pair of these for myself as soon as mom’s lapghan is done tomorrow! If they turn out, I’ll make my mom a pair. She wears a 9, so she should fit in ur pattern perfectly. Thank you so much for sharing this great pattern!

Thank you, Cindy. I’d love to see your slippers when they are done :)

Oh they are soooooooooo cute !! Now a couple of questions for you .. My granddaughters are both size 9 and 10 ladies shoes how would I enlarge them to fit them? I think I know the answer but I want to be sure !
Secondly: How do I put a non skid on the slippers? My middle granddaughter is quite a clumsy lovely angel, but would need some non skid on the bottoms.
Please and thank you very much !!!
Jenny says
Hello Diana. I would it blobs of clear bathroom sealant on the soles and let them dry thoroughly before use :)

hi Again,
I made the second sole and went as per your directions on Rnd 3. Will make note where I goofed in directions….two lines seemed the same. so I think skipped over a line.
thanks!
Melinda

Fingers crossed you have it sorted now, Melinda :)

Hi
Love all the crochet goodies! Started working on those ice pie squares, so cute! Was wondering, I did a sole for the slippers and on Rnd 3 of single layer sole, I think sc 14 is not correct. If I did that, it would have me crochet pass the stitch marker. But I do have a fever right now, so it might be my counting. Can’t wait to finish them. I’m using Classic Elite in Toboggan, sky blue.
Thanks for the patterns!
Melinda
