Sophie's Universe CAL 2015

Sophie’s Universe Book

I am so very pleased to announce that the Sophie’s Universe book is now available for sale!  I am overwhelmed by the number of positive comments and messages we have received since I shared a sneak peek of the book last week.

Sophie's Universe Book Dedri Uys Scheepjes

For those of you who don’t know what Sophie’s Universe is, I will give you a quick summary.  Sophie’s Universe is a continuous square blanket with lots of surface detail.  The pattern was released as a 20-part CAL (crochet-along) in 2015, sponsored by Scheepjes and hosted in the Official CCC Social Group by my good friend Kimberly Slifer (who’s granddaughter this blanket is named after).

Although advanced, the pattern is written specifically for adventurous beginners.  It contains lots of step-by-step photos and hints, and Esther Dijkstra from It’s All in a Nutshell has done video tutorials for each part.  The CAL has also been translated into many languages with the help of my wonderful volunteers.

Quote from the Sophie’s Universe Book

Scheepjes and I started working on a paperback version of the pattern just over a year ago.  The result is this comprehensive 216-page A4 book.  It is stitch-bound, and this, combined with the weight of it, means that it lies flat when open.  I have a thing about nice paper, and my second favourite thing about the book is the fact that it is printed on really nice paper.  I keep running my hands over the pages with a goofy grin on my face.

Just a Few of the Books I Will Be Taking to the Waltham Abbey Wool Show on the 15th of January 2017

My favourite thing about the book is the way it looks!  Hans Mossel took the beautiful cover photograph and Sabine Burkunk was in charge of styling for the cover.  Jane Toft did an amazing job with the layout.  It is everything I didn’t know I wanted until I saw it.  Not only did she use gorgeous colours for the background and cover, but she also created a sense of space and elegance with the design, choosing the featured photos with care and consideration.  I love the fact that my mom and her Sophie are featured on the back cover, and that my boys pop up now and again.

Photo Tasks

During the CAL, we asked people to share photos of their Sophies as ‘photo tasks’.  There is something extra special about seeing the habitat/loves/interests/landmarks that reveal a little bit about the hooker behind the project.

Yarn Packs for Sophie’s Universe

For the CAL, I made Sophie in three different weights of Sheepjes yarn to obtain three different sizes (small, medium, and large).  The book contains information for all three sizes.  If you want to have a look at the materials list and size information before buying the book, you can find all the information HERE.

Sophie's Universe CAL 2015 Lookatwhatimade

From Top to Bottom: Cotton 8 (Small), Softfun (Medium), and Stonewashed XL (Large).

I have since started another Sophie in Colour Crafter.  It follows the same bright colourway as the Small Sophie but works up to the same size as the Medium Sophie.  The Colour Crafter is a great alternative for those people who want to try the pattern with a less expensive yarn.   This colourway is not included in the book, but you can find the details HERE.

Yarn Packs are available in my Wool Warehouse Shop HERE.

I just saw your beautiful book at Joanne’s here in San Diego. I almost bought it, but then asked myself if I would truly do your projects. I didn’t get it but am going back today to get it! It is so inspiring, even though I’ve never really crocheted. I will follow your site, and hopefully learn. Thank you…very very impressive! Barbara

Hi Dedri, I love the color way of Sophie’s blanket that’s on your lap in the photo of you holding your book at the top of this page. Would you mind sharing the color way and yarn used? Thank you for all you do and for your generosity : )

Fabulous book! Beautiful enough to display on a “coffee table,” but I’m too busy using it! I borrowed a tip from another crocheter and had the book spiral bound at the local printer. Tremendously helpful as it now lays flat on my lap while I’m crocheting. Thanks, Dedri, for an excellent tool and a gorgeous pattern.

Hi Dedri, I worked on the original Sophie’s Garden and Universe and everything in between. Sadly my health was not good and I am now stage 4 ((I had to stop crochet approx. 2 years ago). I am so grateful for your kindness and help when I was crocheting. The main thing is I am so pleased to say that my grand children learned to crochet and sew and I have a trunk full of memories in crochet and quilts that the family will look at and think of me.
    Thank you and God bless

    Thank you!

I made the original Sophie’s World piece and decided I had to make the entire project. As advised above, I ordered the book through Amazon in September. Apparently the book was lost in customs, and they were to have reordered it. Having heard nothing, I have again contacted Amazon, and they claim to be reordering the book AGAIN. My crocheting is languishing while I eagerly await your book. Is there an easier way of getting my hands on this?

I just learned of you today. You have quite a gift.
I hate to be that person but I just can’t find the colours. A never ending wild flower pillow was linked to you. It is dark gray and teal. The colours would be perfect for my home but I can’t seem to find the skein. If it does belong to you, could you please let me know which one you used? Thank you in advance.

Hi Susan. I have seen the photo you are talking about and it’s gorgeous. It wasn’t my project. According to pinterest it was made by a lady called Leanne Kassis. Maybe there is some way of tracking her down? Please let me know if you do.

Try going to WEBS online. Look at the Valley Yarns= Haydenville Colors 04 Light Grey, 05 Grey, 11 Teal, 15 Lake.

These skeins are 60% superwash merino and 40% acrylic microfiber. 220 yds. Machine wash cold. Made in Italy. USE $7.99 a skein.
      Hope this helps.

Could you make this book available for kindle?? I searched amazon and am only getting paper book options? I always have my iPad but don’t always have a book I need lol. My daughter is in the hospital a lot (leukemia) and I keep a bag of yarn and a set of hooks in my trunk. I have patterns on kindle or just work up from memory….I would love to have access to your book :)

Hi Tess. We looked into doing that, but at the moment the book will only be available as a paperback. I hope your daughter is doing well. I work as a radiotherapy radiographer, so I deal with cancer on a daily basis. I cannot imagine what you must be going through.

As a workaround, you can use the print friendly button at the bottom of each post to save each part as a pdf so that you can access it at any time.
