I am so very pleased to announce that the Sophie’s Universe book is now available for sale!  I am overwhelmed by the number of positive comments and messages we have received since I shared a sneak peek of the book last week.

For those of you who don’t know what Sophie’s Universe is, I will give you a quick summary.  Sophie’s Universe is a continuous square blanket with lots of surface detail.  The pattern was released as a 20-part CAL (crochet-along) in 2015, sponsored by Scheepjes and hosted in the Official CCC Social Group by my good friend Kimberly Slifer (who’s granddaughter this blanket is named after).

Although advanced, the pattern is written specifically for adventurous beginners.  It contains lots of step-by-step photos and hints, and Esther Dijkstra from It’s All in a Nutshell has done video tutorials for each part.  The CAL has also been translated into many languages with the help of my wonderful volunteers.

Scheepjes and I started working on a paperback version of the pattern just over a year ago.  The result is this comprehensive 216-page A4 book.  It is stitch-bound, and this, combined with the weight of it, means that it lies flat when open.  I have a thing about nice paper, and my second favourite thing about the book is the fact that it is printed on really nice paper.  I keep running my hands over the pages with a goofy grin on my face.

Just a Few of the Books I Will Be Taking to the Waltham Abbey Wool Show on the 15th of January 2017

My favourite thing about the book is the way it looks!  Hans Mossel took the beautiful cover photograph and Sabine Burkunk was in charge of styling for the cover.  Jane Toft did an amazing job with the layout.  It is everything I didn’t know I wanted until I saw it.  Not only did she use gorgeous colours for the background and cover, but she also created a sense of space and elegance with the design, choosing the featured photos with care and consideration.  I love the fact that my mom and her Sophie are featured on the back cover, and that my boys pop up now and again.

During the CAL, we asked people to share photos of their Sophies as ‘photo tasks’.  There is something extra special about seeing the habitat/loves/interests/landmarks that reveal a little bit about the hooker behind the project.

Signed Copies

You can find me at the Waltham Abbey Wool Show on Sunday (15 January 2017), where I will be opening the show, judging the Funky Neck Wear Competiton, and selling and signing books.  I know that many of you are not in the UK and are therefore unable to attend the show or get a signed copy, so the Lookatwhatimade family paid a visit to the Wool Warehouse premises on Saturday, where I signed and numbered the first 120 copies to be sold through their website (link below).

For the CAL, I made Sophie in three different weights of Sheepjes yarn to obtain three different sizes (small, medium, and large).  The book contains information for all three sizes.  If you want to have a look at the materials list and size information before buying the book, you can find all the information HERE.

From Top to Bottom: Cotton 8 (Small), Softfun (Medium), and Stonewashed XL (Large).

I have since started another Sophie in Colour Crafter.  It follows the same bright colourway as the Small Sophie but works up to the same size as the Medium Sophie.  The Colour Crafter is a great alternative for those people who want to try the pattern with a less expensive yarn.   This colourway is not included in the book, but you can find the details HERE.

  2. Just ordered my book. I discovered Sophie recently on Reddit and immediately had to get started on it. My mother’s name was Sophie and she passed in 2009, but I know she would have loved this. This has been such a cathartic project, not only because it has busted my stash, but also because it makes me feel close to mom. I’m almost finished with it, but decided to get the book for when I inevitably tackle this pattern again and to keep on display in my house.

    I am trying to obtain a copy of your book – it says on Amazon that it is not available. Can you tell me where I can get a copy? I live in the USA – I would be willing to pay the postage and all – maybe you know if and when it will be available here in the USA or where I might get a copy.

    • Hi Gail. At the bottom of this post there is a list of places where you can buy the book, the most popular of which are Wool Warehouse and Deramores (both ship internationally). We are still having difficulty getting the books onto Amazon.

  4. I saw a finished product of Sophie Universe afghan last year at our county fair in August 2016, it took my breath away, I took a picture of it on my phone. Last week April 25, 2017 I met the gal who crocheted it and she gave me your web site. I spent lot of time, ink and paper printing it but oh how I would love to have the book.   5. Hey! i reaaallllly want to buy this book- form the Wool Warehouse but I can’t find anywhere in the description what terms it uses, US or UK? Can anyone tell me before i shell out $25 for a book just to not be able to read it?

    • Chiming in because, as difficult as this pattern looks, it is exceptionally well written and explained. I am not an expert crocheter but just had to try this pattern. I was so surprised at how easily I was able to follow it. I’m getting ready to start my third incarnation and decided to buy the book (from Deremore’s US) because part of my printed pattern got put in the recycle container!

      Thank you, Dedri. Sophie has been an amazing experience for this 71 year old who didn’t think she still had it in her! I can’t imagine how you will ever be able to match the intricacy of this pattern while making it easy to follow.

    I really like the colours that are pictured in the blanket that is placed on your lap on the top of this page. I have not seen these colour ways but the main background colour is white. Which pack is this from? Thanks so much Brenda

    • Hi Brenda. The colourway in the front of the book is the Scheepjes Stone Wash XL version if I remember rightly.

  8. Just ordered mine last night from Wool Warehouse and I absolutely cannot wait to get my hands on it. My yarn is in transit at the same time. I even have new hooks and stitch markers for the big event. Can’t wait to start my Sophie!!!

  9. Sophie’s Universe arrived in Wyoming, USA, today. I’m beside myself. I want to take the rest of the week off of work just to sit and gaze at every page and practice my stitches. It truly is a beautiful book, Dedri. You should be very proud. I am honored to own it. Thank you.

  11. Hello Dedri, I am having so much fun crocheting Sophies Universe, it’s such a beautiful pattern. Your instructions and illustrations on the internet are very easy to follow and I so appreciate the time and effort you put into this beautiful pattern. I saw it for the first time last month on pinterest and had to try it. I can’t wait for Amazon, here in the states, to carry the book. What an absolute treasure !

  12. I know that I am not the first to get Dedri Uys book Sophie’s Universe…..BUT it just got here today (WW royal mail to USA 12 days) & it AMAZING!!!! It is Large, full of step by step color photos, gorgeous thick paper (that feels nice…I keep petting it), places for notes throughout the book, beautiful stitching that helps the book lay flat when opened, without having the cat sit on it… With Dedri’s wonderful step by steps on her website & the videos by Esther Dijkstra itsallinanutshell.com …..did I really need this book? YES!!!!!! ok, no….no, I didn’t. All of the information is freely available and printable. But I LOVE it! Anyone that is on the fence about whether or not to get it. If the cost isn’t prohibitive (let’s be clear, book plus shipping from WoolWarehouse to USA was @$24 & in my opinion the quality of this book is worth more, but we all have a budget to follow), I say go for it & you won’t be sorry….Let me add that I do not know Dedri, I just wanted to give a shout out for an amazing book :-)
    This book is lovely! Now to get back to my all white sophie, for my niece :-) Is anyone else super excited when they are able to work a round without having to watch, pause, watch, rewind, watch….the video over and over? ;-)

    • Oh thank you for your beautiful encouraging comment! I am so pleased that you like the book. The intention of creating a book was never to sell copies at the expense of others, but rather to enable those who wanted the printed pattern to get their hands on it. I absolutely love the layout (thank you Jane Toft) and the paper (I stroke my copy too *blush*). Please tag me when you share your all-white Sophie so that I can see it :)

    • You can get the book in the US from US.Deramores.com ($21). And as Deramores is having a big yarn sale right now (including Scheepjes Colour Crafter), and shipping is free with a $50 purchase, it’s not hard to get free shipping to the U.S. They wrapped the book beautifully and the book arrived safely.

  18. Congratulations, Dedri, on this new book! How exciting! Is this book 3 or 4?

    Curious when it will be available on Amazon US? Because of shipping, etc. that would be my preferred way to buy….

    I was thinking about you yesterday – before I read site…because last year at this time I was getting ready for my ‘big trip’ to England for the Lyme Regis retreat and my resultant visit with you and your lovely family….

    does the publisher have any idea how popular this book is? Sold out in no time.
    There was a word out there were another 700 copies available at Woolwarehouse an hour ago…. . And since then their site is in tilt..no way to get in.
    But I won’t give up…. One day I will have my own copy! ;)
