The Smile of Joy Scarf is a textured scarf with a simple repeat. You can use any yarn you wish, but I think this pattern works best in combination with Willow Yarns Dappled yarn. The changing colours and unusual composition of the yarn bring the stitches to life!
We are calling this the ‘Smile of Joy Scarf’ to raise awareness for a South African charity called Smile of Joy (you can read more about them HERE in my latest post). They accept donations of toys (whole and broken), clothes (old and new), re-usable sanitary products, and crochet and knit items. Because this scarf uses less than two skeins of yarn, it will be the ideal item to donate. It would also be the perfect way to use up some scrap yarn in the process.

One year ago, my friend Sabine and her family came to visit us for the weekend. She wanted to make something for a little girl she looks after, so I told her to choose one of the yarns I received as a thank you for Sophie (you can see all the yarns I received HERE). Bine chose Willow Yarns Dappled and started playing around with stitches. As her little scarf unfolded, we both became mesmerized by the way the dark twist in the yarn made the stitches come alive, and by the subtle and wonderful gradient of the yarn.
Bine doesn’t write crochet patterns, she just ‘makes stuff up’. I do, however, write patterns, so I asked her if I could share this pattern, and she was happy for me to do so.

Optional Flower
Round 1: Into a magic ring: ch 4 (this counts as your first dc and ch 1) and then make a dc. (Ch 2, dc, ch 1, dc) four times. Ch 2 and join to the third st of the beginning ch-4 with a sl st. {10 dc, 5 ch-2 spaces and 5 ch-1 spaces}
Please remember, when working into a magic ring you HAVE to work away your initial tail very well. If you just cut it, your whole project might unravel!
Round 2: Sl st into the next ch-1 space, ch 1 and sc in the same space. (Make 5 dc in the next ch-2 space, sc in the next ch-1 space) four times. Make 5 dc in the last ch-2 space. Join to the first sc with a sl st. Fasten off and work away your ends. {25 dc and 5 sc = 5 Petals}
Sew the flower to one of the corners of your scarf.
Optional Lining
Bine has lined her scarf with fleece to make it extra warm. To do that, simply cut a piece of fleece to the same size as your scarf and sew it onto the back of the scarf.

Question can you do a foundation row instead of the chain 59? Beautiful scarf,I am going to make this in a peacock colour in merino and silk yarn.
Dedri Uys says
You definitely can :)

Hi, im making this scarf atm. I’ve done the adult size but its double the kids size and i feel this is too big can you tell me the stitch count? Is it 4 plus 2?
Dedri Uys says
Hi Joanne, the stitch repeat is multiples of 4 + 3 chains to give you multiples of 4 + 1 stitches.
