Floral Crochet Snowflake

I have always been fascinated by snowflakes…by their beauty and by the fact that each one is unique!  There are so many crochet snowflakes patterns already, which made me hesitant to design my own, but since each snowflake is unique, I might as well show you my own take on a crochet snowflake.

Floral Crochet Snowflake Pattern

This tiny snowflake would look great on a Christmas card or as a gift tag.  You can even make some to adorn your Christmas tree.

Floral Crochet Snowflake Pattern

This pattern is part of the Holiday Blog Hop hosted by American Crochet HERE.  You can see the Crochet Christmas Lights Flowers I did for the Blog Hop HERE.  If you are looking for more Christmas ideas, have a look at my Tiny Crochet Wreath and my Christmas Card Printables.

Materials

  • Scheepjes Maxi Bonbon (246)
  • 2 mm crochet hook

Gauge and Size

Gauge and size are not important.  You can make this snowflake as big or as small as you want to (depending, of course, on the hook and yarn you choose to use).  Your tension needs to be as tight as you can comfortably manage otherwise your snowflake will not be firm.

Using Scheepjes Bonbon and a 2 mm hook, my snowflake measured 4.5 cm (just under 2″).  Using Scheepjes Catona (as in the photos for the step-by-step tutorial below) and a 3.25 mm hook, my snowflake measured 7 cm (just under 3″).

Abbreviations

US Terminology Used {US/UK Conversion HERE}

  • Ch – Chain
  • Sc – Single crochet
  • Sl st – Slip stitch
  • St – Stitch/stitches
  • () and * – Repeat instructions between parentheses and asterisks the number of times specified.

Special Stitches

Please note that the Puff Stitch is closed with a ch st. This ch will be the top of your Puff Stitch, and you will work into it in the next round.  You can find a tutorial for the Puff Stitch HERE.

Beginning Puff Stitch

If you are making the Puff Stitch at the beginning of a row or round, sl st into the indicated stitch and then pull up a loop to the height of a double crochet.  This will be referred to as a ‘long loop’.  Follow the Puff Stitch instructions below.

Puff Stitch

Yarn over and insert your hook into the indicated stitch/space.  Yarn over again and pull up a long loop (3 loops on hook).  (Yarn over and insert your hook into the same stitch/space.  Yarn over again and pull up a long loop) three more times.  You should now have 9 loops on your hook.  Finally, yarn over and pull through all 9 loops on your hook.  Ch 1 to close the Puff Stitch.

Instructions

Round 1

Into a magic ring: Ch 1, make 6 sc.  Join to the first sc with a sl st.

Stitch Count:  6 sc

Am l missing something or what? I don’t see in the instructions for Round 4 where, after the first ‘Point’ then Ch 3, you attach to the next Puff Stitch. It is written that, after the Ch 3, you then do the Ch 5 for the next Point but never do a Slip Stitch until after the Ch5. Your photo 2 in Round 4 has an arrowing pointing to the next Puff Stitch so I “assumed” the next instruction would be to Sl St into the Puff, at least this is what I did and it worked for me.
Making lots of little ornaments as I am “sheltering at home” during this Covid-19 outbreak. Never too soon to start the Christmas ornaments! Love this snowflake!

Hi, love love love your blog.
I have made 30 snowflakes for my grandaughters class using your pattern. we starched them and they have hing by paperclips from the classroom ceiling. On the last day of school (yesterday) as they all said goodbye to their teacher as it is the end of the school year and they go up a grade when school restarts last week of Jan, all the children took home a snowflake!
I also made bunting and lanterns. thank you Dedri.

Thanks for the sweet pattern! I realized last night as I put up my handmade crafts tree that my crochet wasn’t represented (but the quilling, cross stitch, Hardanger lace, knitting, spinning, and crafts with my DD were!) I intend to get one done soon!

Working through a Sophie’s Afghan for a holiday gift, too! Such a wonderful design – so many people have said it’s the “prettiest thing they’ve ever seen crocheted” or “it’s enough to make [them] learn to crochet.” Hope I get it done – the Indian Summer we had slowed me down! Thanks again!

You’re welcome Michele. ‘Indian Summer’ sounds glorious! I see you are a Jill of all trades. I used to do all sorts of crafts until crochet ambushed me! Merry Christmas,

Well! A Belated and Blessed Anniversary to you and Christiaan!
And thank you for this darling Floral Snowflake! Think I’m going to make a couple (or a few!) today.
And I really want to thank you for always having the “print friendly’ link on your page….makes it so much easier to grab the pattern – and I know your link is automatically attacked to the file.

My best to all of your lovely family. Your boys are so darling. But they are growing up far too fast. I barely recognized Pater – he’s getting so big. Please give them all my love….I do think of them often.

You’re welcome, Debra. They are teeny tiny, so unless you have doll-house cups and saucers, they won’t be much use for coasters, hehe. I’ve just made another one and I’ve noticed that a loose gauge makes the Puff stitches twist sideways, so keep your tension tight!
