Continuous Crochet Baby Blanket (Preemie/Car Seat)

Following on from my Continuous Solid Square tutorial, I have made a continuous crochet baby blanket that is just the right size for a preemie or a car seat blanket.  I love how vibrant the colours are.  They have an Autumnal richness to them that was very hard to capture on camera.

Continuous Crochet Baby Blanket

This baby blanket is 63 cm x 63 cm (25″ by 25″) and takes 3 skeins of Noorse Sokkenwol yarn (just under 500 meters in total).  It works up very quickly and it is solid, but not heavy.  It is worked in a spiral so that there are no visible ‘steps’ in the colour (apart from where one skein ended and the next began).

Continuous Crochet Baby Blanket

If you want to make a bigger blanket, 6 skeins (1000 meters) will give you a blanket that is roughly 90 cm x 90 cm (35″ x 35″).  To adapt the pattern (below) for this larger size, simply repeat Round 3 until you have made 31 rounds in total, and then work the last round as specified in the pattern.

Continuous Crochet Baby Blanket

Just look at those gorgeous colours!!

This is a written-only pattern.  If you need step-by-step help or more details, please see How to Crochet:  Continuous Solid Square.  Please note that your sides won’t all have the same number of stitches.  That is because this blanket is worked in a spiral, not in joined rounds.

Materials

  • 3 skeins (less than 500 m) of Scheepjes Noorse Sokkenwol (968) – Small Colour Packs available HERE.  The colour packs include a printed version of the pattern, and pompom ribbon for an optional pompom edging.  For a list of other Scheepjes stockists, visit Scheepjeswol.com.

Instructions

Round 1

Into a magic ring: Ch 3 (counts as first dc) and make 2 dc’s.  (Ch 2, make 3 dc’s) three times.  Pull the magic ring closed before continuing.  Working into the side of the initial ch-3, make 2 dc’s.  You should now have 5 dc’s in the last side.  Please see THIS TUTORIAL if you are having difficulty understanding these instructions.

Round 2

Ch 2.  Make 2 dc’s in the first dc of Round 1.  Dc in the next dc, which will be the last dc before the next ch-2 corner space.  Make 2 dc’s in the next ch-2 corner space.  *Ch 2.  Make 2 dc’s in the same ch-2 corner space.  Dc in each dc across.  Make 2 dc’s in the next ch-2 corner space.*  Repeat from * to * 2 more times.  {28 stitches – 5, 7, 7, and 9 for the respective sides}

Round 3

*Ch 2.  Make 2 dc’s in the same ch-2 corner space.  Dc in each dc across.  Make 2 dc’s in the next ch-2 corner space.*  Repeat from * to * 3 more times.  {44 stitches – 9, 11, 11, and 13 for the respective sides}

Rounds 4 – 22

Repeat Round 3.

Round 23 (or Last Round)

*Ch 2.  Make 2 dc’s in the same ch-2 corner space.  Dc in each dc across.  Make 2 dc’s in the next ch-2 corner space.*  Repeat from * to * 2 more times.  You have now completed 3 of the sides for this round.

Last Side of Last Round:  Ch 2.  Make 2 dc’s in the same ch-2 corner space.  Skip the first (hidden) stitch.  Dc in each of the remaining dc’s.  Make 1 dc in the next ch-2 corner space.  Ch 2 and sl st into the first dc of the next side.

Finishing Off

Continue making a sl st through both loops of each dc across.  When you get to a corner, sl st in the top loop of both of the corner ch st’s.  Continue in this way until you get back to the first sl st.

Fasten off and pull the tail of yarn through the same dc so that it is to the back of your work.  Work away your tails of yarn.

Thank you for the relaxing, quick pattern! On my 4th baby throw. Also, the comments of the skipped stitch every 4th or 5th “row” was essential for maintaining a consistent square shape! The tutorial was also a ‘god send’ for my success! My new favorite throw pattern!!!

Can you direct me to the note in the pattern which suggests skipping the first hidden stitch to avoid a curl.

Hi Marjo. This is Dedri’s comment from the same query from another crocheter
“ In the pattern, I recommend that you skip the first st of every side for one round every few rounds (every 4 or 5). This will prevent the centre from twisting and will also prevent your blanket from ruffling. If you are doing a non-continuous granny, you would turn at the end of every round to fix it as you said, but as this is a continuous square, that is not possible in this instance. Skipping the recommended stitches will have the same effect”

      Hope that helps.

Thank you so much! I got the project started and can’t wait to see how it turns out. So easy and relaxing to do.

I am excited to start this pattern. I noticed the comment for skipping the hidden stItch. I can’t seem to find in the directions other than for the last round. Can you direct me to the notes. Thank you.

Hello! I used this pattern to do a baby blanket, but the edges started to swirl. I was told you need to turn the blanket in order to keep the lines straight. Where do you turn at? Or is there another way to avoid the swirl? Thank you

Just finished this pattern, made it close to a 40 inch square using Bernat Pop and a 5.0 hook. Definitely a pattern I will keep to make again. Thanks for sharing.

Any suggestions on making this rectangular instead of square? I’d love to make a twin-sized one for my daughter’s bed.
    Thanks

Hi, thank you for the beautiful blanket pattern!

I started making this blanket (using a bit different yarn and hook size its 4.5 mm), and as I continue crocheting, the square doesn’t sit flat, it has some “waves”. I’m doing everything according to your instructions.
Do you have any tips? would it get better as the square grows?

    Thanks!

Hi Agat. There is a note to say that you should skip the first hidden st of every side every few rounds if your blanket waves. The more it waves, the more often you should skip the first st of every side. Have you got a photo of your work?

I am sure. All will be ok now, nice to see you are happy and hope you continue to enjoy
