Welcome to Part 7 of Charlotte’s Universe. This week we start a three-part Petal Border that can be used as a stand-alone border for any blanket (provided your stitch count matches what is suggested below.
Most of you will recognise this border as a squared-up version of Parts 5 and 6 of Sophie. It was quite tricky working out the maths (especially to get the little grape hyacinths in the corners to work out). Oooh, just wait until we can start ‘planting’ them next week! I think you will love them!! For now, simple does it as we create the foundation and the first set of Flowers.

Yarn/Colours for This Week’s Photo Tutorial
I’ve had a fair few questions about the yarn I’m using in this week’s photos, so I thought I’d add the information under Frequently Asked Questions in the Information Post.
Instructions
© Dedri Uys and Scheepjes 2021. All Rights Reserved.
The instructions for the next three parts can be used to create a Petal Border for any blanket. If you choose to use this for a border, you will need a multiple of 24+4 stitches per side (not including ch-2 corner sps).
Round 68 (Colour A)
Sl st into the ch-2 corner sp. (Ch 3, dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in the same sp. This is your first corner made.
*Dc in each of the 148 st across. (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in the next ch-2 corner sp.* Repeat from * to * 3 more times, omitting the last corner on the last repeat. Join to the beg ch-3 with a sl st.
Stitch Count Per Side: 152 dc – not including ch-2 corner sps
Round 69 (Colour A)
Sl st into the next dc and into the ch-2 corner sp. Ch 4 (counts as your first hdc and ch-2 sp). Hdc in the same sp. This is your first corner made.
*Hdc in each of the 152 st across. (Hdc, ch 2, hdc) in the next ch-2 corner sp.* Repeat from * to * 3 more times, omitting the last corner on the last repeat. Join to the second ch of the beg ch-4 with a sl st. Fasten off and work away your ends.
Stitch Count Per Side: 154 hdc – not including ch-2 corner sps
Round 70 (Colour B)
Join your yarn by making a standing dc in any ch-2 corner sp. (Dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in the same sp. This is your first corner made.
*Skip the first (hidden) st and dc in each remaining st across. (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in the next ch-2 corner sp.* Repeat from * to * 3 more times, omitting the last corner on the last repeat. Join to the first dc with a sl st. Fasten off and work away your ends.
Stitch Count Per Side: 157 dc – not including ch-2 corner sps
Round 71 (Colour C)
Join your yarn by making a standing sc in any ch-2 corner sp. (Ch 2, sc) in the same sp. This is your first corner made.
*BPsc in each st across. (Sc, ch 2, sc) in the next ch-2 corner sp.* Repeat from * to * 3 more times, omitting the last corner on the last repeat. Join to the first sc with a sl st.
Stitch Count Per Side: 157 BPsc and 2 sc – not including ch-2 corner sps
Round 72 (Colour C)
Sl st into the ch-2 corner sp. (Ch 3, dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in the same sp. This is your first corner made.
*Skip the first (hidden) st. (Dc, ch 1, dc) in the next st. This is your first V-stitch made. (Skip the next 2 sts, make a V-stitch in the next st) 52 times. Skip the last st. (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in the next ch-2 corner sp.*
Repeat from * to * 3 more times, omitting the last corner on the last repeat. Join to the top of the beg ch-3 with a sl st. Fasten off and work away your ends.
Stitch Count Per Side: 53 V-Stitches and 4 dc – not including ch-2 corner sps
Round 73 (Colour B)
In this round, you will be forming the tulips. Your work will seem quite tight at the end of this round, but don’t worry about it too much. Keep your tension relaxed when making the ch-2 sps and you will be just fine!
Join your yarn by making a standing dc in any ch-2 corner sp. (Dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in the same sp. This is your first corner made.
*Dc in the first (hidden) st. (Ch 2 and make a Popcorn Stitch in the ch-1 sp of the next V-Stitch) 53 times. You should now have 53 Popcorns; one in each V-Stitch from the previous round. Ch 2, skip the next 2 dc, and make a dc in the last st before the ch-2 corner sp. (2dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in the next ch-2 corner sp.*
Repeat from * to * 3 more times, omitting the last corner on the last repeat. Join to the first dc with a sl st. Fasten off and work away your ends.
Stitch Count Per Side: 53 Popcorns, 6 dc, and 54 ch-2 sps – not including ch-2 corner sps
Round 74 (Colour A)
In this round, you will be working into the ch-2 sps from Round 73 AND between the V-Stitches from Round 72. When working between the V-Stitches, work IN FRONT OF the relevant ch-2 sp. I have found that it is easier if you fold the ch-2 down behind your work when making the stitches between the V-Stitches from Round 72, otherwise it just gets in the way.
Helpful Tip: To make it easier to check your repeats in the next round, please put stitch markers in the following dc on each side: 1, 9, 17, 25, 33, 41, 49. In other words, the first dc and every eighth dc after that.
Join your yarn by making a standing sc in any ch-2 corner sp. (Ch 2, sc) in the same sp. This is your first corner made.
*Skip the first (hidden) st and sc in the next 2 sts {Photo 1}. Working in front of the ch-2 sp, dc between the next dc and the first V-Stitch from Round 72, directly below the ch-2 sp {Photos 2 and 3}. Sc in the same ch-2 sp from Round 73 {Photo 4}.
(Skip the next Popcorn. Sc in the next ch-2 sp {Photo 5}. Working in front of the ch-2, dc between the 2 V-Stitches from Round 72, directly below the same ch-2 sp {Photo 6}. Sc in the same ch-2 sp from Round 73 {Photo 7}) 52 times.
Sc in the next ch-2 sp. Working in front of the ch-2, dc between the last V-Stitch and the next dc from Round 72, directly below the ch-2 sp {Photo 8}. Sc in the last 3 sts. (Sc, ch 2, sc) in the next ch-2 corner sp {Photo 9}.*
Repeat from * to * 3 more times, omitting the last corner on the last repeat. Join to the top of the first sc with a sl st. Fasten off and work away your ends.
Stitch Count Per Side: 113 sc and 54 dc – not including ch-2 corner sps
Round 75 (Colour C) – Petals
You will be making Petals in this round. To help you avoid copious amounts of frogging, please check that Petals 1, 4, 7, 10, 13, 16, and 19 fall in a marked dc. If they don’t, you’ve made a booboo.
Join your yarn by making a standing sc in any ch-2 corner sp. (Ch 2, sc) in the same sp. This is your first corner made.
*(Skip the next 3 sts. Make 4 tr in the next st. Ch 3 and sl st into the third ch from your hook. This is your Picot made. Make 4 tr in the same st as the last 4 tr. Skip the next 3 sts and sc in the next st {Photo 1}) 20 times. The last sc should fall in the second-last dc from the previous round. Skip the next 3 sts. Make 4 tr in the next st. Ch 3 and sl st into the third ch from your hook. This is your Picot made. Make 4 tr in the same st as the last 4 tr. Skip the last 3 sts. (Sc, ch 2, sc) in the next ch-2 corner sp {Photo 2}.*
Repeat from * to * 3 more times, omitting the last corner on the last repeat. Join to the first sc with a sl st. Fasten off and work away your ends.
Stitch Counts Per Side: 22 sc, 168 tr, and 21 Picots {21 Petals} – not including ch-2 corner sps
Now, wasn’t that fun? And next week’s grape hyacinths will be even more fun!

Hi Dedri
I’m thoroughly enjoying Charlotte’s Universe! Thank you so much for sharing the pattern and spreading the love.
Row 69: shouldn’t there be 156 stitches at the end of the row if each stitch is working in?
TIA xxx
Jenny Lowman says
Hi Jessica. There are 152 stitches in round 68 not including the chain 2. Add the 2 hdc for the corners not including the 2 chains, and you have 154 stitches per side.
Hope that helps.
