The Chatty Bit
Charlotte’s Universe is a continuous square blanket with a lot of floral/lace detail. She carries elements of Sophie’s Universe and my Banksia patterns (because they are all sister-patterns). She also inspired some elements of the Ubuntu CAL 2018 (most notably the use of the Popcorn Wheat-stalky things to create corner interest).
This pattern was originally shared in 2021 as a 12-week crochet-along, with the original being made in Scheepjes Softfun Aquarel.
The CAL featured LOADS of tutorial photos by yours truly, charts by Masako Kawahara from Crochet_Hmmm (who also happens to be our Japanese translator), and videos by Esther Dijkstra from It’s All in a Nutshell. The pattern was written for adventurous beginners, and with that in mind, the book also includes step-by-step photos and Masako’s beautiful charts. Please note that this book is written in US terms!
Over the last week, I have been sharing sneak peeks of the book on Instagram and on my Facebook Page. You are welcome to pop over there and read ALL the words about each photo. But just in case, I’m sharing them again here as a little collage so you can see some of my favourite features of the book.
Apart from the charts and step-by-step photos, another feature that makes me very happy is the layout’s ability to give the pattern space to breathe, making the instructions feel more approachable. Jane Toft has done a fantastic job with the layout, and I especially love that the pinks in Charlotte’s Universe complement the Turquoise in Sophie’s Universe so well! They make the cutest little sister-book collection.
There is also a colouring-in page, with a QR code that will take you directly to a PDF of the colouring-in page if you wish to print out some copies.
The rainbow version featured at the start of this post is the main one featured in the book. Mainly because I just cannot stay away from rainbow colours, but also because it is much easier to demonstrate how stitches interact with each other if I used different colours for each round (well, ALMOST each round).
The book also features the three original colourways: Vintage Charlotte, Sunshine Charlotte, and Pink Charlie. As a bonus, it also features Esther Dijkstra’s Strawberry Ice Cream colourway – the one she made when doing the video tutorials. Finally, it features a brand new Scrumptious colourway, made by Rineke Rottine (with a thingy on the e, but I can’t find the thingy!)
While the books offer a more polished experience, it is worth noting that Charlotte’s Universe is still available online as a free crochet-along, so you don’t have to buy the book to be able to make this blanket.
As the cherry on the cake, two pages are filled with submissions from people who made Charlotte. Thank you to each of you for submitting your photos and for being part of this with me!
I would like to thank each and every person who tested, translated, proof-read, moderated… basically everyone who helped in any way! Special thank you to Scheepjes for bringing this book to life so that Sophie’s Universe can have a sister book. Ooh, and to Wool Warehouse for giving me the opportunity to sign the first 100 books :)
