These crochet animal ears have been designed by Anette Bak for our Little Zoo Zebra. They work up quickly and are fairly straightforward.

(Make 2 with MC interior and CC rim)
The ear is shaped like a leaf.
Materials
Use whatever yarn and hook you are using for the animal you are making. These ears are quite big, so if you would like smaller ears, go down a hook size.
Abbreviations
This pattern uses US terminology. See this comparative chart for all abbreviations (and UK equivalents).
Round 1
With MC: ch 7 (Photo 1). Work into the top loop only of each ch st. Sc in the second chain from the hook. Hdc in the next ch. Dc in the next 3 ch’s (Photo 2). (Hdc, 2 x sc, hdc) in the last ch (indicated with an arrow in Photo 2 an illutrated in Photo 3).
Continue around the chain, working into the remaining loops of each ch st and OVER the initial tail of yarn. Dc in the next 3 st’s, hdc in the next st. Sc in the last st (Photo 4). Join to the first sc with a sl st. Ch 1 and bind off. (14)
Round 2
Turn the ear so that the wrong side is facing you. Don’t crochet over the tails of yarn. You will knot them together later and pull them into the head.
With CC, join your yarn by making a standing sc in the last sc of the previous round (not the sl st, which is indicated with an arrow in Photo 5). See Photo 6. Sc in the next 5 st’s (Photo 7).
(Sc, ch 2, sc) in the next st (which should be on the pointy end of the ear). See Photos 8 and 9.
Sc in the next 6 st’s. Sl st in the last st, which already contains the sl st join (Photo 10). Ch 1 and bind off. (14 sc’s and 1 ch-2 space)
Knot the CC and MC yarn tails of yarn together as in Photo 10 below. These two knots will be inside the head when the ears are attached, because the ears are joined as you go. You won’t be able to see them on the finished zebra.
If, however, you are going to attach these ears to any other animal by sewing them on, you should use one of the tails of yarn to attach the ear to the head, and work the rest of them away.

I have to share – I went on a hunt on google for cute animal ears for a Zebra project I am doing, and I was so delighted when I saw this pattern come up and then realised that you Dedri, my Ubuntu friend, was the designer. I knew I was in good hands and these would work out – they did!!! Thank you!
