Crochet Rainbow Blanket

This Crochet Rainbow Blanket was the very first thing I made that Pieter approved of.  It was also my first crochet project after learning to crochet almost two decades ago.

Linen Stitch Crochet Rainbow Blanket

We have a lot of fun with this blanket.  Because it is crocheted very loosely, it is lovely for playing hide and seek under.  His dad usually pulls the blanket over both of them and then I poke my finger through the holes to try and ascertain what’s inside.  Of course he can see me through the blanket, but he squeals none the less when I poke my finger through and jab him in the ribs or belly :)

This blanket is perfect for beginners.  You don’t even have to know which loop belongs to which stitch.  All you need to be able to do is poke your hook through the ch-1 spaces between stitches.  It also grows ridiculously quickly.

Rainbow Crochet Blanket Pattern

Size

140 cm x 170 cm

Materials

  • 500 g of double knit yarn (light worsted weight/#3) – one 100g ball should give you about 28-30 rows and you’ll need about 5 balls.  I used Hayfield Bonus Dk in Sunflower, Emerald, Royal, Signal Red, and Bright Orange (in that order).
  • 10mm crochet hook (US 15/N/P)

Please Note:  This yields a VERY loose blanket.  If you want a more dense blanket, use chunky yarn and a 8 mm hook instead (US 11/L).

Abbreviations

US Terminology Used  (US/UK comparison chart HERE).

  • Ch  – Chain
  • Rem – Remains/remaining
  • Sc – Single crochet
  • Sp/sps – Space/spaces
  • St/sts – Stitch/stitches
  • () – Repeat instructions between parentheses the number of times specified.

Instructions

This pattern uses the linen stitch.  You can find a photo tutorial for it HERE.  If you want to make a smaller item using this stitch, consider making a Linen Stitch Dishcloth/Lovie.

Linen Stitch Crochet Rainbow Blanket

Make yourself very comfortable and START COUNTING.

Foundation Chain

Chain 150!

Row 1

Sc in the top loop only of the fourth chain from the hook.  The third ch of this ch-4 will count as your last ch-1 sp in the next row.  (Ch 1, skip the next ch, sc in the next ch) until you have worked into every ch st.  TURN.

Stitch Count:  74 sc, 74 ch-1 sps, and 1 turning ch-3

Row 2

Ch 2 (counts as sc + ch-1 sp).  Sc in the first ch-1 sp.  To do this, insert your hook under the ch st between the first 2 sc sts and make a sc.  (Ch 1, skip the next st, sc in the next ch-1 sp) until 1 sc rem.  Ch 1, skip the next sc, sc in the space created by the turning ch-3 at the start of Row 1.  TURN.

Stitch Count:  75 sc and 74 ch-1 sps

Row 3

Ch 2 (counts as sc + ch-1 sp).  Sc in the first ch-1 sp.  (Ch 1, skip the next st, sc in the next ch-1 sp) until you have worked into each ch-1 sp (including the one formed by the turning ch-2).  TURN.

Stitch Count:  75 sc and 74 ch-1 sps

Rows 4 – 150

As Row 3, changing colours roughly every 30 rows (See Changing Colours below).

When you get to the end of the last row, ch 1 and fasten off.  Work away your ends.

Changing Colours

You can change colours as often as you like.  I changed colours every 30 rows (ish).  More accurately, I changed colour when my yarn ran out.

Happy Hooking!

I have strips to crochet together but don’t have any extra yarn. How can I crochet them together with a different thread without it being noticed,

Hi Barbara. Maybe Google search ‘invisible seam crochet join’. This is the join least likely to let you see the joining yarn in my experience :)

Kind of respoding to your later post…..Also known as “lattice stitch” but prefer the linen stitch. This is my favorite go -to crochet pattern for quickie dish cloths for gifts for my friends who appreciate the value of a well made dish cloth or a baby bib (just add straps!) Use an H or K hook and worsted weight cotton.
Your first attempt is a winner! Keep it up, Giiiiirrrrrrrrrl!

Thanx, Linda. I am a huge fan of this stitch too. I’ve never heard it called lattice stitch. What a pretty name. I really like “mile-a-minute” as well :)
