I am head over heels in love with this Lazy Waves Blanket. It is thick and squishy and brilliantly simple to make.
I started working on this blanket almost a year ago but then put it aside to focus on the Block a Week CAL 2014. A couple of months ago I got a sudden urge to finish it, and I have been working on it whenever I could find a few minutes in the evenings.
You have no idea how thrilled I am to finally be able to sit under it!
I have used Stylecraft Special Dk (2 strands at a time), but you can use 1 strand of worsted weight yarn instead. It should come out more or less the same size (depending on your tension/gauge, of course).
This Lazy Wave Blanket is an awesome stash-buster. You probably won’t notice, but I have used Clematis instead of Fondant on some repeats, and Grey instead of Silver on others. I don’t think it makes a jot of difference and it allowed me to use up 2 lots of scraps so that I can buy some more.

Materials
- 2 strands of double knit yarn (light worsted weight) OR 1 strand of worsted weight yarn – see Colour List below for details on the type and amount I used
- 5.5 mm Clover Amour Crochet Hook (US 9/I UK 5)
- Yarn needle…sigh
Gauge
Using dc stitches (US Terminology):
14 stitches and 8 rows per 10 cm (4”) square
Please note: Using 2 strands of double knit yarn instead of 1 strand of worsted weight, there was a difference of 2 mm at the end of 4 rows, which means that it doesn’t matter which of the 2 roads you choose to go down.
If you have a look at the photo on the left, you will see that the blue swatch (2 strands of dk) is slightly larger than the grey one (1 strand of ww).
Size
120 cm x 150 cm (stretches to 170…because it’s heavy!)
Abbreviations
US Terminology Used (see this comparative chart for US/UK conversion)
- Ch/chs – Chain/chains
- Dc – Double crochet
- Sc – Single crochet
- St/sts – Stitch/stitches
- Tr – Treble crochet
- * – Repeat instructions between asterisks the number of times specified
Notes
You can use any yarn and hook you fancy. You can make as many or as few starting chains as your little heart desires.
- Starting Chain: Multiples of 8 + 4 starting chains
- Will give you: Multiples of 8 + 2 stitches

Instructions
To Start
Ch 164.
Row 1
Working into the top loop only of each ch st: Dc in the third chain from the hook. Dc in the next ch. *Tr in the next 2 chs, dc in the next 2 chs, sc in the next 2 chs, dc in the next 2 chs*.
Repeat from * to * until you reach the end of the chain. If you have started with 164 chs, you will repeat the instructions 19 times, giving you 20 repeats in total. The last st of the last repeat should fall in the last foundation ch st. Change colour on the last yarn-over of the last dc. Ch 1 and turn. This ch st does not count as a st.
Stitch Count: 162 sts {40 scs, 82 dcs, and 40 trs}
Row 2
Dc in the same st as the turning chain (see this tutorial if you are unsure which stitch that is). Dc in the next dc. *Tr in the next 2 sc’s, dc in the next 2 dc’s, sc in the next 2 tr’s, dc in the next 2 dc’s*.
Repeat from * to * until you reach the end of the row. The last st of the last repeat should fall in the last dc, not in the turning chain (which doesn’t count as a stitch). Change colour on the last yarn-over of the last dc. Ch 1 and turn. This ch st does not count as a st.
Stitch Count: 162 sts {40 sc, 82 dc, and 40 tr}
Row 3 to Row 119
Repeat Row 2… It’s that simple.
When you feel that your blanket is long enough, bind off and work away your tails of yarn.
How much yarn will I need?
- Double knit: 42 meters per row (@7 colour repeats that will be just under 1 skein of Stylecraft Special DK per colour for a total of 5300 meters)
- Worsted weight: 18 meters per row (@7 colour repeats that will be 126 meters or ¾ skein of Deborah Norville Everyday Worsted Weight per colour for a total of 2200 meters)
My Lazy Waves Colours
I used 17 balls of Stylecraft Special DK. I used 2 strands held together to create a thicker, larger (lazier) blanket. I know…lazier is not a word…
Stylecraft is an awesome budget yarn that feels (and washes) way better than most acrylics. You can buy the “Lucy” pack (which contains exactly 17 balls), you can use the 17 colours I used (listed below), or you can use stash yarn and make the blanket outrageously colourful and awesome!
If you prefer worsted weight, I highly recommend Deborah Norville Everyday Worsted Weight Yarn. It is anti-pilling and feels unlike any other acrylic I have ever worked with. It is soft and sturdy with just the tiniest hint of a shine. I used it to make the animals for my book, Amamani Puzzle Balls, and loved it so much that I bought a whole lot more.
Below you can find a list of Deborah Norville colours that best match the Stylecraft colours I used. In fact, bar 2 colours that they do not stock and 2 colours that are a slightly different shade, the colours match perfectly.

I don’t like crocheting over my ends, because I work them away backwards and forwards, so I have to get the needle out even if I do crochet over them. I believe (and this might just be because I don’t do it often enough) that it slows me down fiddling with holding the yarn in place to crochet over it. When I made this blanket, I hadn’t seen Jo’s No Needles Needed tutorial, otherwise I would have used that instead.
So as you can imagine, I ended up with a truck-load of tails …
… which turned into this …
… and finally this …
You can, of course, add a border if you want to, but this blanket is specifically designed so that the edges will be neat and straight. The ch-1 turns are not visible or bumpy and there are no gaping spaces at the start of each row.
I hope you have great fun with this pattern!

Hello! I love the look of this pattern, but I am having difficulty getting started. I have ripped it out three times because no matter how careful I am with counting, I end with two extra chains at the end of the foundation row. I am not sure where I am going wrong. I am using a multiple of 8 plus 4. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance! I would really love for this to work. My plan is to use Batman themed colors!
Dedri Uys says
Kristen ,hi. The full repeat is 8 stitches, ending on 2 dc’s. The row starts with an additional 2 dc’s (the first of which consists of 3 of the 4 extra chains, the second of which will be made into the 4th extra dc. Your rows will always start and end on 2 dc’s. The pattern contains a link to a chart as well if you find charts easier.
If you could walk me through how you start and what you do, I might better be able to help you,
Dedri

Thanks for your reply Dedri! Your first sentence answered my question. I was ending the wave pattern with the two SC. I didn’t realize I had to do two more DC at the end. I am going to try it again now. Thanks so much! :-D
Dedri Uys says
You are welcome. I hope you are flying along now!
Amy says
I am having this exact same problem. At the end of the row, I do two dc’s and have two chain left! I’m so confused. When I started, I did 172 chains. Then I did a DC in third chain from hook. Then another DC. Then triple crochets in the next two chains. Then single crochets in the next two chains. Then back to continuing the wave and did DC’s in next two chains. Did I start incorrectly? It seems like it’s right according to your picture tutorial, but it’s not adding up.
Amy says
Oops! I said that wrong. I do not do two SC after the two triple crochets. I do another set of double crochet before I move to single crochet. I hope this makes sense.
Amy says
Geez, I just realized I had skipped over a couple chains without noticing so I’ve solved my own problem. Not my finest moment! Haha.
Dedri Uys says
Hehe, I’m glad you figured it out. I have done that once or twice myself! Ask if anything else bothers you.
Kathryn says
Thank you! I found this pattern just in time. I’ll be starting a new project for a local non-profit that depends totally on donated yarn. We end up with lots of bits and pieces. My plan was to use shades of white (sorry, no grays this time…lol) with the other strand of yarn being the bits & pieces of colored to make a lapghan for local nursing home residents. We always give them out so that forgotten residents that won’t have gifts to open on Christmas morning will have at least one from us. Any above that is just bonus. I’ve been wondering what pattern to make, and this fits the bill perfectly. I’m not worried about making complete rows with any one color as the white will help tie the colors together.
Thank you so much. Now I’m ready to finish this current Wheelchair Shawl so I can get busy with this pattern.
Dedri Uys says
Kathryn, that sounds great. I hope you will share a picture when you are done.

Just wanted to say thanks for your gorgeous blanket. Using the stitch as inspiration making a mermaid tail snuggie.
Jenny says
Please send us pics when done, Kim! I have to say this is my favourite afghan stitch pattern :)
Amy says
Love this blanket!! Do you crochet in the front loop for the whole blanket?
Dedri Uys says
Hi Amy. Only for the first row. The rest of the rows are all worked through both loops. Have a look at the photo tutorial for the Lazy Waves if you have any questions.

What a wonderful blanket – so colourful and cheerful. I think if you dont mind a row not being all in the same colour it would be a wonderful use of the “magic ball” of yarn you talked about last week. I am delighted with that idea – joining together all your scraps that arent big enough for anything. This would also be wonderful in an organised “rainbow” I think. Thank you as always Dedri I love your ideas
Jill Decoster says
Hello Dedri
I have had my eye on this pattern for a while now, I really love it! But I am already working on the Sophies Universe CAL (I’m way behind) and on the Dutch CAL (I manage to keep up there), so I’ll have to wait… Last week, I saw a fund raising for Nepal, people are knitting and crocheting cosies for tea light holders. So I made a lazy waves cosy in rainbow colours and I just love it. It’s such a relaxing pattern, and it looks amazing. I really need to get the CAL’s done, and then get me some nice soft yarn and finally make this blanket. Thank you for designing all these great patterns and sharing them with us!
Dedri Uys says
Hi Jill. Your cozy sounds lovely. Thank you for you wonderful comment x
Jamine Deal says
I have been working on the Lazy Waves Blanket for some time! It is fun and simple. I will use the needle to weave in ends which, as you know, there are many!! I have a nice pic on FB if you would like to see an interesting color pattern. Thx for the pattern!
Jenny says
Jamine, you show me yours, and I will show you mine! :)
I LOVE this pattern and have made a lapghan for my father and am slowly going through another for myself, hopefully for my bed when finished.
JoAnn McLean says
Just for reference to crocheting over your ends…. I made this pattern years ago and every second row was a single crochet of a common colour (eg: black every other row… white every other row… or whatever you wish! ) That solved the problem for me!
LOVE this pattern… thank you!
Dedri Uys says
Hi JoAnn.
If I understand you correctly you would still only have made one row with each colour. How did you get your working yarn to be on the right side for the next row of “common” colour? I would love to follow your suggestion (because I hate working away tails), but don’t completely understand. Thanx
JoAnn McLean says
Dedri… my sincere apologies! I completely forgot about this post! The pattern I used was a free patter from Patterns by Dot that I found… 2006! The name of the pattern was “Scrumptious Scraps Afghan” and the URL was: http://patternsbydot.blogspot.com/2006/01/scrumptious-scraps-afghan.html
I do not know if this link is still valid, but as the pattern was free, if you email me I could give you the details? The pattern started out with a black chain cast on, second row was again in black sc back st each chain . Then on to the scrap colours, alternating with black rows. As I say… email me and I can go into it in more detail if you desire.
Again.. my apologies for not following up on this!
Have a good day!
JoAnn
JoAnn McLean says
…. I see the link still works! Enjoy!
JoAnn
Dedri Uys says
Hi, JoAnn. No worries. Thank you for the link. There are plenty of waves patterns and Dot’s is gorgeous. I see she uses a slightly larger wave formation, broken by lines of single crochet. It’s a brilliant scrap-busting pattern.
JoAnn McLean says
You are most welcome Dedri! I love yours and plan to use it to stash-bust in the near future! Have a great day!

Donna says
I love this beautifully colorful blanket and am going to get started on one right after the holidays. My question (sorry if it is silly) is if you use 2 strands together, and I purchase the yarn in the 17 pack, I will need to get 2, correct?
Dedri Uys says
Donna, you will only need to buy 1 pack, providing you are intending to use every colour in the pack. I used different colours, but only 17 balls in total.
Judy Salmon says
I think Donna had the same question as I did (and I feel foolish asking) but if you just have one skein of the colour, how are you using two strands? Do you measure it off and cut it before you do the row? I was thinking I needed a second skein of each colour as well. Sorry for being so thick!!
Dedri Uys says
Judy, hi. Don’t feel foolish. I worked from both ends of each skein (outside and inside) at the same time.
I hope that makes sense.
Judy Salmon says
It makes perfect sense! You have made my night as I am going to start my blanket now! Thank you so much for your gorgeous patterns and for taking the time to reply – your enthusiasm is contagious :)
Julie says
Hi,
Love this blanket and just started with it. I also like the “no needles” tutorial but I have a question on how you used it with this blanket. The tutorial says to weave in the beginning of the new color after the first row. As your pattern does only have one row per color – did you weave in both of one color at once? I’m afraid that this gets quite bulky an that side of the blanket?
Thanks for any advice, Julie
Dedri Uys says
Hi Julie. I didn’t use the no needles method for that blanket because I hadn’t seen the tut at that point (as mentioned in the post), but I have used it for subsequent projects.
Due to the nature of the lazy waves blanket any method you use will be slightly bulky. The no needles method does come out less bulky than sewing the tails away.
Andrea says
Thank you for the pattern. I was looking for a special pattern to make for my 4 year old granddaughter. Started several different ones but was not happy. This one is perfect. I’m using Vanna’s Choice yarn in Eggplant, Dusty Purple and Pearl Mist.
Dedri Uys says
Those colours sound great together, Andrea. Have fun!
Viki says
WOW, those colors are GORGEOUS!!! In fact, not only for the blanket, but they’re exactly what I’m looking for to paint the church fellowship hall!!! LOL… Thanks.
Dedri Uys says
Hehe…I want to see your church fellowship hall when it’s done!
Jaime says
So, I am very tempted to drop my other projects and start on this instead! This is beautiful! Can’t wait to make my own! Thank you for sharing!
Cyndie says
Love this! Ran to my yarn basket to start using up my leftovers from other projects. Kept adding rows to watch the pattern build. Makes a lovely scarf while the blanket is in progress =) Just tuck in the part with the loose tail. I do cut at the end of each row and work the loose ends under.
Dedri Uys says
I am so pleased that you like it, Cyndie
Jodie says
Love the pattern!! Only problem I see is choosing the color scheme lol

I have searched and searched for the referenced tutorial regarding No Needle Needed. Any idea what happened to it and an idea of how to find it?
Dedri Uys says
Martie, the link was broken, but it is fixed now.

I just tried to use it and I guess it’s still btoken. :(
Dedri Uys says
Hi Linda. I have checked the link and it is working for me. Can you check again and let me know? Thanx

Dedri – Thank you for posting this pattern. I can’t wait to make one for my family room! Hope your finger is much better and that you’re able to create and crochet again!!! All the best to you and your family. dd
Dedri Uys says
Hi, Dee Dee. My finger will be better soon – if I stop taking the splinty thing off because I mistakenly think it already IS better. Enjoy the blanket :)

This is so beautiful and I can’t wait to get started. Thank you!

Dedri, Thanks for sharing a great pattern. I was looking for something interesting to use up odd bits left over from projects (I have a basket full of yarn balls). Now I’ve found it and can soon get started. Yeah! :-)

Just a pleasure, Mary. I hope to see a picture of your scrappy blanket soon!
