Welcome to Part 2 of the ‘I Carry Your Heart’ Mandala. In this part, we will join our four hearts and plant Corner Flowers between them. At the end of this part, you’ll have a flower-shaped ‘thing’ with twelve bumpy bits around the outside. I don’t know how to word that better :)
Please note that I am using Scheepjes Softfun for the tutorial photos so that it is easier to see how the rounds interact with each other.

Instructions for Flowers for Sam
Joining the Hearts
When joining the hearts to each other, there are 3 steps:
- Step 1: Work into Side One of one heart
- Step 2: Work into Side Two of the next heart
- Step 3: Join the hearts together with a (sc, ch 1, skip 1) join
Working into the first heart: *With RS facing, join your yarn by making a standing sc in the ch-2 corner sp. Sc in the next 30 sts (don’t accidentally skip the first hidden st). Hdc in the next 8 sts. Dc in the next 8 sts. The last dc should fall in the marked dc from Round 15.
Ch 8, sl st through 2 loops of the 5th ch from the hook. Ch 6, sl st in the same ch. Ch 4, sl st in the same ch. This is your ‘Little Flower’ made. Ch 3. Mark this ch-3 with a SM.
Working into the next heart (RS facing), make a dc in the marked st of the second side. Dc in the next 7 sts. Hdc in the next 8 sts. Sc in the next 30 sts. Sc in the next ch-2 corner sp.
Ch 1 and TURN.
Place the heart you’ve just been working into on top of the other heart so that their RS are facing each other, the one you are working on is closest to you, and your hook is to your right (left, if you are left-handed).
Working through both layers, sc in the last st and the first st of the joining round {Photo 1}. (Ch 1, skip the next st, sc in the next st) 21 times.
Ch 1. Skip the next st of both layers. Dc2tog, working into the next st of the back layer first {Photo 4} and then the next st of the front layer {Photos 5 and 6}.
Ch 1. Skip the next st of both layers. Tr2tog, into the next st of the back layer first and then the next st of the front layer.
Ch 1 and make a sl st in the ch of the Little Flower that already contains all the other sl sts. Ch 1 and pull this ch-1 tight to form a little knot.
Fasten off and work away your ends.*
Join each of the four hearts to each other in a clockwise direction (counter-clockwise, if you are left-handed), repeating the instructions from * to * above.
Filling in the Centre
Once all four hearts are joined, you will notice a hole in the middle of your mandala {Photo 1}. We are going to close that now.
With RS facing, join your yarn by making a standing 2-dc Bobble in ch-2 corner sp at the pointy end of any of the hearts {Photo 2}. (Make a 2-dc Bobble in the ch-2 corner sp of the next heart) 3 times {Photo 3}. Join to the first 2-dc Bobble with a sl st. Fasten off {Photo 4}.
Corner Flowers
We will now create 4 corner flowers. Each one is worked independently and consists of 3 rounds.
Round 1
With RS facing, join your yarn by making a sl st in the marked ch-3 sp of the join. [Dc, ch 1, dc] into the first ch-4 loop of the ‘Little Flower’. Working into the ch-6 loop: (ch 1, dc) 3 times. Ch 2. Working into the same ch-6 loop: (dc, ch 1) 3 times. [Dc, ch 1, dc] into the last ch-4 loop of the ‘Little Flower’. Sl st into the next ch- 3 sp of the join. TURN.
Stitch Count: 10 dc, 8 ch-1 sps and 1 ch-2 corner sp.
Round 2
With WS facing, (sl st in the next st, sl st in the next ch-1 sp) 4 times. Sl st in the next st, ch 2 and skip the next ch-2 sp. (Sl st in the next st, sl st in the next ch-1 sp) 4 times. TURN.
Stitch Count: 17 sl sts and 1 ch-2 corner sp.
Round 3
With RS facing, ch 1. Make a Puff Stitch in the same ch-1 sp as the last sl st. (Ch 1, make a Puff Stitch in the next ch-1 sp) 3 times. Ch 2. Mark this ch-2 sp with a SM on the first flower only. Working over both ch-2 sps, make a Popcorn, ch 2. (Make a Puff Stitch in the next ch-1 sp, ch 1) 3 times. Make a Puff Stitch in the last ch-1 sp. Ch 1 and fasten off, pulling the last ch tight to form a knot. Work away your ends.
Stitch Count: 8 Puff Stitches, 1 Popcorn, 6 ch-1 sps and 2 ch-2 sps.
Repeat these steps for the remaining 3 joins, so that you have a Corner Flower planted between each heart.
