I have a little confession to make about my latest crochet project. Ever since I first designed the Lydia square, I have wanted to turn it into a Lydia blanket, and that is exactly what I have done (with some help from two very good friends).
Lydia Blanket Work in Progress
I didn’t have the time to make all the squares required, so my dear friend Lynnette is helping me make the squares for the Lydia blanket. And wonderful Jenny is helping me do the border. I do a bit and hand it over to her, she does a bit and hands it back, we rest a bit and talk crochet…and then we start all over again. It’s proving to be a real team effort (and all the more special for it).
The Lydia blanket is (surprise, surprise) quite pink, but the greens and blues break it up nicely. Jenny says it makes her eyes open wide. I think that’s a good thing. I HOPE that’s a good thing!
When I was working on it the other day, I put my camera down on the blanket for a second to assist one of the boys with something. I forget now what it was (or which of the boys, for that matter), but when I got back to my ‘work station’ I was mesmerized by the reflection in my camera lens. It made me think of my mom, because she is always noticing patterns (like me). If I hadn’t mentioned it, would you have noticed it?
The border is a little bit bland at the moment, but come next week it will be a veritable rose garden! It is the bit of the pattern that I am most excited about showing you!!
To reward you for your patience, I will show you what the Lydia blanket looks like at present… Tada!
If you would like to see the final Lydia blanket (especially the border), please pop back next Friday. In the meantime I would love to know which joining method and border you would use if YOU were making this blanket.
Yarn packs for this project are now available from Wool Warehouse (includes printed pattern), Deramores, and Loremar. For a full list of Scheepjes stockists, visit Scheepjes (NL).

Such gorgeous blanket! I love the fact that you ventured out from your comfort zone with the colors- the result is stunning. Delicate pink and green are spiced up with fuxia/dark pink and turquoise! I’d never could have imagine that turquoise color works so well in this as it does.
You truly are a marvel, Dedri!
And also a terrible tease- c’moon, I want to see that rose border already!! :)
Dedri Uys says
Hehe, I am a terrible tease, you are right. I hope you have now seen the border :)

I love the subtle join, and would not change that at all. It allows the detail of the squares to pop. Border? No idea!
Kathleen says
How much of each color in Cotton 8 should I order to make the Lydia Blanket? Also, can u tell me the finished size of the Lydia Blanket? Would you recommend this yarn for the CAL? I’m off to a late start on that project
Dedri Uys says
Hi Kathleen. The Lydia blanket and the CAL are 2 separate things. I used the Lydia squares as an option for making Sophie’s Universe rectangular, but that is the only part Lydia played in the CAL.
The yardages for the Lydia blanket will be posted on Friday when I post the pattern. x

Oh I’m thrilled to have come across this post. I’ve just started on a Lydia blanket but I used rounds 1&2 from the Jack square as I loved the effect of the fpdc. Also I’m using a rainbow palette and mixing up the colours so the squares are all different. Haven’t decided yet how I’ll join the squares or do the border so I’ll definitely be checking back to see yours. I love the colours in the original Lydia square!

This is a very exciting post, because I decided last week to make my daughter a Lydia blanket for her birthday! I don’t want to WAIT to see your border, but I’ll be good.
Dedri Uys says
Oh, brilliant. Is her name Lydia, by any chance?

I would stop at the dark pink round, and do a join as you go with the light pink! Well, maybe after six months when my shoulder is better but already on my to do list, for a while now, and have been buying yarn!!! I would make the boy and girl version this is 1 of my favorite squares!!
Dedri Uys says
Ooh, join as you go sounds lovely! I hope your shoulder is better very soon (much sooner than 6 months!)
