Odyssey, by Letitia Sherriff, is the first square of the Block a Week CAL 2014, hosted by the Official CCC Social Group on Facebook. You can find all the information about the CAL HERE.
Update: This square does not have a photo tutorial because we had not decided to do photo tutorials when we did this square, and so hadn’t obtained permission to do so. If you would like to start with some of the squares that do have photo tutorials, I suggest starting from Week 5 onwards and then coming back to this square later on.
From the photo above you can see that I am not an experienced block-maker by any means. The pins were just so that I could photograph the block better. I understand now why afghans need to be blocked!!!
This is the block up to the end of Round 6. Doesn’t it make a pretty flower?
Odyssey Square
Pattern

Materials
- 4 mm crochet hook (US G/6 UK 8) – I recommend Clover Amour Crochet Hooks
- Stylecraft Special Dk (Double Knit/Light Worsted Weight/#3) – You will need 1700 g (5100 meters) of yarn, not including the border and joining.
Specific Colours
- Aspen (Rounds 1 – 3)
- Saffron (Rounds 4, 5, 7, and 8)
- Aster (Round 6)
- Magenta (Round 9 and 10)
- Shrimp (Round 11)
- Fondant (Rounds 12 and 13)
- Sherbet (Rounds 14 and 15)
Size
Using the hook and yarn specified, your square should be a nice even 12″ when you are done. Using a 4 mm hook, my square came out at 8.5″.
Corrections
- Round 10: The total stitch count is 87, not 86.
- Round 11: Should read: Finish off the round with two additional sc’s, then join with a sl-st to first sc. (104 sc).
- Round 12: Should read: Repeat from * to * 3 times (ending with 8 dc in the last repeat). Sl-st to top of beg ch-3. Finish off colour A.

Linda, you need to follow the pattern link at the start of Dedri’s tutorial to acces it fully.
Each block Dedri highlighted has a full pattern link. Dedri went through some of the patterns to give tutorials for this CAL that was done in 2014-15, and hosted on CCC crochet group on Facebook. They were not Dedri’s original patterns.

Shirley, there isn’t a final yardage count because the blanket squares were designed by many different designers to come together as one project.

I love the look of this cal and can’t wait to start but must order the yarn and I may order only the six or so that you mentioned. Too many will overwhelm me. I also know I am coming into this late but better late then never. How many squares do we need to do for the afghan? If the squares are 12×12 and I hope mine are I am just wondering how many squares do I do? Silly question maybe but I need to know and if I only order the six or so skeins how many or each do I order. Love your website! Blog! You inspire me! Best to you. XX

Hi Patricia and welcome to the CAL :)
If you will be using worsted weight yarn, your squares will be 12″ or thereabouts. I used double knit yarn, so my squares were about 9-10″. Most people used all 48 squares in their blankets and that will give you a blanket that is large enough to cover a queen size bed. Yardage will depend very much on which yarn and hook combo you choose to use, as well as your own personal tension.
In the post for Betty’s Blanket you will find a list of the yardages she used following my colourway (for the most part) in double knit yarn.

First, I just want to say that I love your site, you are brilliant at blogging. It is running top of my list next to another one (I wont mention). I briefly toyed with the idea of starting my own blog but seeing yours and others out there I dont think I have what it takes. Anyway the CAL lol. I am sooo behind on this. I was trying to finish a cross-stitch a month from facebook, which took a lot longer than it should have. I have just ordered the Attic 24 pack, which looking at your blocks are gorgeous (never used Stylecraft before), but how do you choose what colours to go where, you seem to have a rhythm going then swap with no warning lol. others on facebook use completely different colours. I am fairly new to crochet and even newer to Squares. Do you have any advice for me please, I am so scared that my squares are going to come out drab and boring. Please, please help me.

Louise, I am sorry about the swapping thing. This is my very first attempt at a full-blown blanket and I started out thinking I would use every colour in the Attic 24 pack. As the squares progressed, though, I realized that there are really only 6 colours I want to use: Pomegranate, Meadow, Saffron, Magenta, Turquoise, and Sherbet, with hints of some of the other colours every now and then.
So my latest squares all feature these colours. I am wondering if I shouldn’t go back and do the first 10 squares again…but I just don’t have the time at the moment.
I just wing it every week. If i was you, I’d choose no more than 6 colours per square and stick to that. You don’t have to use the whole pack. Save the rest for another project x

I have just started the Block 1 of the weekly blocks – I am stuck on Round 4 ‘what is the stitch tc’ I find that I only have 30 sts at the end as I have left out the tc.

Patricia, the tc is a treble crochet (usually abbreviated as a tr). Wherever it tells you to tc in this pattern, make a treble crochet.

* Are you counting each “leg” of the trx as one stitch, or are you counting both “legs” as one stitch? Should be both.
* Are you remembering to skip a st between the “legs” of each trx?
