Over the next 3 weeks I will be sharing instructions for making Sophie rectangular (with the aid of 2 square designs), adding an optional border, and adding the last little bits of surface detail.
The design was only ever meant to be a square and the rectangular options were purely added for those people who really wanted a rectangular blanket. There are so very many variables. You might want to make the squares or border in different colours. You might only want to use one of the squares. You might not want to add anything until you see the border…
I anticipate that a few people won’t like the squares-option, so i am going to supply a link to an alternative pattern to use for growing your Sophie into a rectangle (HERE). I have absolutely no way to predict which rows of this pattern you will want to do, or in which colours, so I cannot tell you how much yarn you will need, even if you threatened to take away my whole yarn-stash.
So with that having been said, here are the yardages for the optional squares and border (and the colours I would use).
You will need 9 squares for the top of the blanket and another 9 for the bottom. You will have 2 squares to choose from – a dainty, lacy version and a more manly solid version (which I prefer and will be using to demonstrate what it will look like).
Colours and Yardages Per Round
- Optional Squares and Border Cotton 8
- Optional Squares and Border Softfun
- Optional Squares and Border Stonewashed XL
If you want to buy the Yarn Packs, you can find them all HERE.
Have a great evening,

Hello Dedri,

Dedri, I the words of my great grandson…. “You the bomb” This has and is going to continue to be one of the best experiences I have ever had in my crafting life. Thank you so much. I have been showing so many people here in Australia your beautiful designs and patterns. You have enriched my life and everyone thinks I am very clever to be able to make something so beautiful. Little do they know how easy you made it for me to follow. THANK YOU!!!!!! lots of hugs from “down under”

Dedri, thank you so much for all you have done for us on this CAL. I’m still way behind, but loving how it is coming along! Never thought I would make something so beautiful!

I joined Sophie’s family only a couple of weeks ago – stumbled across a picture and fell in love immediately.
I tried the first few rounds in some acrylic stash yarn but then decided to do it properly in good cotton – in colours like your XL version. Have to catch up a lot now, but I’m convinced it’s worth it. So far, it’s turning out beautifully!
Thank you for this lovely CAL!

You are most welcome :)

Thank you for all your wonderful comments. I wish I had time to reply to each one separately as each one is equally appreciated and special to me. I have been inundated with messages today, so please forgive my general response.
You have all reminded me that I should not waste energy on negativity and I feel properly silly for letting a few bad comments drag me down. I apologize for that. Maybe in another year I will have learnt this life lesson. Life really is too short to indulge any negativity that isn’t constructive.
I am off crochet for fun now (first time in MONTHS). You do the same!

Enjoy!

I am sorry for what has transpired Dedri. It is easy for people to say not to let these people get to you. There are more of us out there whom do appreciate the opportunity you have provided all of us to see the beautiful work and learn so much. Please stay and continue with the wonderful work you do and with the opportunities you have provided us with. I, as many of us, have learned so much and have applied this to other pieces I am making. You have taught me to let loose and be creative in crochet. If need not be boring or monotonous at all. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I am one of so many whom have been inspired by you. Please stay with us!!!!
Dedri Uys says
Hi Myriam. I am not going anywhere. Thank you for your lovely comment. Occasionally I get a string of nasty comments/feedback (usually in clusters) and I let myself be bothered by them. This is a personal failing and I am working hard at changing that.
I do this because I love crochet and I love teaching others to love crochet. I am sorry that I lost sight of that a tiny bit yesterday.
God bless,
Dedri

This is my very first CAL, and I have to say that because of all your extremely hard work ,excellent skills in crochet, and above all your ability to teach, share, and your love for crochet, I will coming back to your web site for many years to come. Thank you for EVERYTHING!!

Thank you, Margaret. Pieter is probably the most relieved of the lot. He keeps asking me: “How many sleeps until you’re done?”

Thank you for posting these estimates so that I’ll know whether to buy more yarn for the border(s) on my growing collection of SU blankets.

I am so sorry to hear you received unkind messages, I haven’t started my Sophie yet, but you are an artist and I’m so thankful for all the work you put into this lovely pattern which makes us look better then we are. I know hurtful comments are hard to forget, but please know that there are far more that love you and your work
Susan says
Just wondering if I can make it a larger square I like the square. I did the 8plyband would like it about 50cms bigger if possible thinking if I count I can probably repeat some of the earlier rounds ie the butterflies or some more tulips perhaps thanks Susan
Jenny says
You can make it as big as you like. Add squares all round or just increase the rows, but that is down to you do decide how and what to do :)
Alison says
I can’t believe people have been badgering you & being unpleasant to boot. What a cheek!
I have had so much pleasure from this CAL, from the pattern AND the friendly and helpful tone of your instructions & Web page. Thankyou, thankyou, thankyou for the whole, lovely project. Those rude, demanding people are in the minority, shame on them.

Thank you for sharing the colors for the next few weeks’ portions. I had been debating on purchasing more yarn as I have run out of one of my main colors (it corresponds to your lt turquoise). Now I will make that purchase. I have had so much fun making my Sophie: flowers on ice (at Ravelry as CM3548). Thank you for sharing your talent with all of us.
Dedri Uys says
Cheryl, would you mind sending me a message on Ravelry so that I can remember to look at your blanket when I am have time to ooh and aah properly? Thank you for your comment,
Dedri

Hi Dedri, I just want to thank you for your CAL post also for the post on organizing your yarn. Thank you for your time and care you put into your site.

Dear Dedri
What an amazing person you are. You work, have a young family to care for, have your own values and life to live and yet you give so freely of your incredible gift and designs. You could have made a small fortune from this pattern and the tutorials. You have a kind, generous soul and thousands of people around the world are smiling and feeling a sense of achievement because of you.
Let the negative from the few who obviously find fault with a sunny day blow away with the wind and smile and laugh with the rest of us, as your spirit shines like the dawn on a new day.
These words are how you have inspired me.
Regards
Diana

It would be nice if all the yard ages were in one place. Where are the ones for the main blanket? I just finished and stopped at part 17. Gave the blanket to a neighbor that has been having a hard time lately. I belong to a knit/crochet group, Prayerfully Made, that makes and donates to Catholic Charities, our local Cancer clinic and others. I’d love to send yo a picture. How do I do that?
Tracy Doyle says
You are amazing! Thanks for everything you have taught me on this journey. It has and continues to be pure pleasure! Thank you, thank you, thank you!
