Over the next 3 weeks I will be sharing instructions for making Sophie rectangular (with the aid of 2 square designs), adding an optional border, and adding the last little bits of surface detail.
The design was only ever meant to be a square and the rectangular options were purely added for those people who really wanted a rectangular blanket. There are so very many variables. You might want to make the squares or border in different colours. You might only want to use one of the squares. You might not want to add anything until you see the border…
I anticipate that a few people won’t like the squares-option, so i am going to supply a link to an alternative pattern to use for growing your Sophie into a rectangle (HERE). I have absolutely no way to predict which rows of this pattern you will want to do, or in which colours, so I cannot tell you how much yarn you will need, even if you threatened to take away my whole yarn-stash.
So with that having been said, here are the yardages for the optional squares and border (and the colours I would use).
You will need 9 squares for the top of the blanket and another 9 for the bottom. You will have 2 squares to choose from – a dainty, lacy version and a more manly solid version (which I prefer and will be using to demonstrate what it will look like).
Colours and Yardages Per Round
- Optional Squares and Border Cotton 8
- Optional Squares and Border Softfun
- Optional Squares and Border Stonewashed XL
If you want to buy the Yarn Packs, you can find them all HERE.
Have a great evening,

Hello Dedri!!
First , before I say anything, I want to Thank You!! From the absolute bottom of my heart, “Thank you Dedri! ” For taking such time and such care and to be willing to help so many ( myself included as i’m just getting ready to start this beautiful “Sophie”!! I have sat back, awe inspired by this beautiful piece of art that all of my fellow crocheters on FB were partaking in! I wanted to jump in so badly!!!! I’m older and have a horrible back situation that has been the sole reason that i’ve stayed back, watching others. Now, I’ve got a few friends on the CCC crochet site on FB that are willing to start this journey with me. Some are in a similar situation as myself, others just want to partake in this experience for the 2,3rd , 4th time!! LOL I’m so excited!! I will be making the big Sophie, and I plan on making the border as well! This will be the first project I have ever made for myself, and I’ve been crocheting for over 35 years! So, my 50th birthday is this next week…and my birthday request will be yarn…because Sophie will be the star of this birthday!! LOL I would love to use the yarn you’d chosen for that one, but finances will not allow for that….so will try to find something comparable in weight , from what I’ve seen, that is the beauty of your pattern, that no matter what is chosen, its just as beautiful as can be!! Thank you so very much for sharing – not only your pattern- but your time, your thoughts, your heart and soul….the way you have done!! Blessings to you Lady!! :-)

I cannot understand why some people can never be satisfied with what they have or not have. For all I have read about Dedri, she is a very kind-hearted lady that loves doing what she shares with us all here on her pages of the love for crocheting and other crafts that she has done. I have looked through all her pages from the first postings to now, and I have to take my hat off to Dedri. From the little green Truck to the Sophie, the pages are full of love. Thank You for all your patterns, your postings, but most of all Thank You for the love you share everyday with us all. I know seeing the negitive bothers you but just look where it comes from, unsatisfied people that like to complain about everything. You have more followers that love you, focus on that.
God Bless You Dedri.

I’ve just remembered a lovely thing my Sainted and long-suffering Mum used to tell me when a small kindness had met with ingratitude and rudeness (mostly me when I was a stroppy teenager!) :- ‘if you handed some people the world on a plate, they’d find fault with the pattern!’. It was ever so, sadly! Glad you are steady on your feet again.

Hehe, I should print that and put it on my fridge, Pam! Thank you :)

I cannot understand how people have the nerve or think they even have a right to demand or even complain. This is a free thing and if they don’t like it, well ya know….. Anyway I have enjoyed this even during the most challenging parts. I have learned so much from you and this. Keep up your wonderful work and thanks for being so kind and willing to share the beauty you create with others.
