Instructions
Six of your motifs will have only one leaf (three with light green leaves and three with dark green leaves). Six of them will have two leaves – one light green and one dark green. Please consult the Colourway Diagrams at the start of Part 1 – 3 to see which flowers will have one (and which colour) and which will have two.
Motifs With One Leaf/First Leaf
On your flower motif, identify the last joining st between any two Petals.
On the right-hand motif (left, if you are left-handed): Starting in the last unworked st of the Petal, count 9 sts and place a SM. This should be the second st before an increase.
On the left-hand motif (right, if you are right-handed): Starting in the first unworked st of the Petal, count 13 sts and place a SM. This should be the first st of an increase.
Now you will proceed to making a leaf, joining it to your Flower in Round 7 of the leaf.
Leaf (Using Yarn N or O as indicated in the Colourway Diagram)
Round 1: Into a magic ring, ch 5 (counts as tr + ch-1), tr, 12 dc. Join to the fourth ch of the beg ch-5 with a sl st. {12 dc and 2 tr – not including ch-1 sp}
Round 2: Ch 3 (counts as dc throughout). [2 dc, tr, ch 1, tr, 2 dc] in the ch-1 corner sp. Dc in the next 3 sts, the first one of which will be hidden, here and throughout. Make 2 dc in each of the next 8 sts. Dc in the last 2 sts. Join to the top of the beg ch-3 with a sl st. {26 dc and 2 tr – not including ch-1 sp}
Round 3: Ch 3. Dc in the next 3 sts. [2 dc, tr, ch 1, tr, 2 dc] in the ch-1 corner sp. Skip the first (hidden) st. Dc in the next 6 sts. (Make 2 dc in the next st, which will be the second dc of the increase from the previous round. Dc in the next st) 7 times. Make 2 dc in the next st. Dc in the next 2 sts. Join to the top of the beg ch-3 with a sl st. {39 dc and 2 tr – not including ch-1 sp}
Round 4: Ch 3. Dc in the next 6 sts. [2 dc, tr, ch 1, tr, 2 dc] in the ch-1 corner sp. Dc in the next 10 sts. (Make 2 dc in the next st, which will be the second dc of the increase from the previous round. Dc in the next 2 sts) 8 times. Join to the top of the beg ch-3 with a sl st. {53 dc and 2 tr – not including ch-1 sp}
Round 5 Ch 3. Dc in the next 9 sts. [2 dc, tr, ch 1, tr, 2 dc] in the ch-1 corner sp. Dc in the next 13 sts. (Make 2 dc in the next st, which will be the first dc of the increase from the previous round. Dc in the next 3 sts) 8 times. Join to the top of the beg ch-3 with a sl st. {67 dc and 2 tr – not including ch-1 sp}
Round 6: Ch 3. Dc in the next 12 sts. [2 dc, tr, ch 1, tr, 2 dc] in the ch-1 corner sp. Dc in the next 17 sts. (Make 2 dc in the next st, which will be the second dc of the increase from the previous round. Dc in the next 4 sts) 7 times. Make 2 dc in the next st. Dc in the next 3 sts. Join to the top of the beg ch-3 with a sl st. {81 dc and 2 tr – not including ch-1 sp}
Round 7 and Joining
Ch 2 (counts as hdc). Hdc in the next 15 sts. [2 dc, tr, ch 1, tr, 2 dc] in the ch-1 corner sp. Hdc in the next 20 sts. (Make 2 hdc in the next st, which will be the first dc of the increase from the previous round, hdc in the next 5 sts) twice.
Ok. Deep breath. This isn’t hard, it’s just fiddly and you have to go slow.
Place the leaf between the two marked Petals as shown in the photo below.
Remove your hook from your work and insert it from front to back into the marked st of the Petal to your right (left, if you are left-handed). Insert your hook back into the last st of the leaf {Photo 1} and pull it through the st on the Petal {Photo 2}. Hdc in the next st of the leaf {Photo 3}. This is your first joining hdc made.
Working into the next st on the Petal and the SAME st on the leaf, make another joining hdc {Photos 4 and 5}. This will create your next increase on the leaf. Make a joining hdc in the next 3 sts of the Petal and the Leaf {Photo 6}.
Working only into the leaf: hdc in the next 2 sts, make 2 hdc in the next st, hdc in the next 2 sts.
Ch 3, pull up a loop, and remove your hook. Skip the next 6 sts of the Petal. Insert your hook from front to back into the next st of the Petal and pull the loop through. There should now be 1 st unworked before the last joining st between Petals. Ch 3 and sl st into the last hdc you made on the leaf to form a Picot. You may have to turn your work a little to do this.
Hdc in the next st of the leaf. Ch 3 and pull up a loop. Skip the first unworked st on the next Petal and pull the loop through the next st as before {Photos 11 and 12}. Ch 3 and sl st into the last hdc you made on the leaf to form a Picot.
Working only into the leaf: hdc in the next 2 sts, make 2 hdc in the next st, hdc in the next 3 sts {Photo 13}.
Skip the next 6 sts of the Petal and make a joining hdc in the marked st of the Petal and the next st of the leaf. Make a joining hdc in the next 2 sts. Make a joining hdc in the next st of the Petal and the SAME st on the leaf to create your increase. Make a joining hdc in the next st of the Leaf and the Petal.
Working only into the leaf again from this point on, hdc in the next 4 sts, make 2 hdc in the next st, which will be the first dc of the increase from the previous round. Hdc in the next 5 sts, make 2 hdc in the next st, which will be the first dc of the increase from the previous round. Hdc in the last 4 sts. Join to the top of the beg ch-2 with a sl st. Fasten off and work away your ends. {91 hdc, 4 dc and 2 tr – not including ch-1 sp}
Motifs With Two Leaves
For motifs with 2 leaves, you will need to repeat the instructions above on the opposite side of the Flower, remembering that one of the leaves will be Colour N and one of them will be Colour O.
I know this seems like a lot to get done in a week, but there are only 18 leaves to make, compared to the 24 Petals each for Parts 1 – 3. Also, mainly dc sts. Also, isn’t it such a rush completing each Flower/Leaf configuration in preparation for next week? This was my favourite part of the making!
