Block 22 of the Block a Week CAL (hosted by Kimberly Slifer) is Melinda Miller’s Crown Jewels. This is a very pretty square, and easy enough, except for Round 8, which just about fried my brain! You’re going to need a good strong cup of coffee and a quiet corner for that round, I think.
We have featured quite a few of Melinda’s squares so far. Her patterns are clear and easy to follow, and her designs are gorgeous!
UPDATE 2017: I have had to remove the photo tutorial as the designer has changed the pattern and my photo tutorial no longer matches her instructions. Below you will find a link to the pattern, as well as the hook and yarn I chose to use for this square in 2014 (although the colours per round will be slightly different now).
Crown Jewels Crochet Square
{Pattern © 2009 Melinda Miller from MoCrochet. Photo tutorial done with kind permission}
Suggested Materials
- 5 mm Clover Amour Crochet Hook (US H/8 UK 6)
- Worsted weight yarn
Size
- Using the hook and yarn specified, your square should be a nice even 12″ when you are done.
- Using a 4 mm crochet hook (US G/6 UK 8) and double knit yarn, as I have done, your finished square will be about 8.5″ big.
Pattern
- You can download the pattern from Ravelry.

I am using Stylecraft Special DK.

- Pomegranate (Round 4)
- Sherbet (Rounds 5, 6, and 7)

The pattern linked in this square does not match your photo tutorial on round 7. I imagine the author changed it or something but Ive been reading and reading and tey just dont match!! HELP!!!
Dedri Uys says
Hi Joana. The designer has indeed changed the instructions. I was made aware of this last month, but I have not had time to look at the pattern and compare the two. Please follow the written pattern and disregard this tutorial.

I want to add a comment for anyone like me, following this years later. It seems Melinda Miller updated her version of the pattern in Feb 2016 and the photo tutorial no longer matches in rounds 6 & 7. It now squares off more fully in in round 6 and round 7 is a sc round. Just thought I would add this in the hope it saves someone else confusion.

Hi, I’ve been working my way through the CAL now for a few months and I’m a bit confused when I get to round 7 of this square. Your directions say dc’s but the original pattern says hdc’s. Which is correct to follow?
Thanks,
Danielle
Dedri Uys says
Hi Danielle. The designer has updated the pattern, so my photo tutorial no longer matches. I have removed my tutorial.

Wow, finished row eight. Think I will stop and have that glass of wine now that you mentioned earlier. I am going to toast to your wonderful instructions…….
Dedri Uys says
Oh…wine…thanx for reminding me, Mary. Well done on making it through the round. I will toast to your square :)

LOVE this block!!! So pretty! I’m not looking forward to round 8 however. I know from experience that it is hard; I made this block on moogly
Carrie says
Oops sorry did NOT mean to post that :/! Anyway a block on moogly almost entirely made from them! http://www.mooglyblog.com/2014-moogly-afghan-crochet-long-block-2/

Hi Deirdre
I believe at the stichcount of row 4 it should say 36 dc’s and 18 popcorn stitches and in row 5
there should be 18 sets of 4 stiches.
