Hi guys!
You might have noticed that I have been missing in action the last three weeks. I have not abandoned crochet. In fact, I have been doing nothing but crocheting. Well, as much as my “real life” will allow me to, at any rate.
Those of you who followed the Block a Week CAL 2014 will know that the CAL (crochet-along) was hosted by the Official CCC Social Group on Facebook (you have to be logged into Facebook in order to access the link to the group). The mastermind behind the CAL was my good friend Kimberly Slifer. In 2015 I will be teaming up with Kimberly again for another fun, mystery CAL.
Those of you who follow me on social media (or who belong to the Official CCC Social Group already) will have seen a few hints regarding what the blanket will look like and which design it is based on. Please do not assume anything. I know it is tempting to get started, but I suggest that you wait until the CAL actually starts.
Sophie’s Universe CAL 2015
Update: You can now find all the information and links for the CAL HERE. We have translations, videos, groups, and a map!
The CAL will start January 18th 2015, and will run for 20 weeks. Remember to mark the date on your calendar!
Please note that this project is a continuous, square blanket, which has been specifically designed for this CAL, not a lot of individual squares like the last one. It will be worked in the round, with photo tutorials for each part being released weekly on a Sunday.
All instructions will be written using US Terminology. See THIS CHART if you need help with US/UK conversion.
Size
The pattern was designed for worsted weight yarn and a 5.5 mm crochet hook (US I/9 UK 5), which will give you a finished size of 1.8 meters squared. That’s just shy of 6 feet, for those of you who live on the other side of the pond.
You are not, however, limited to worsted weight yarn. I will be using Scheepjeswol for the CAL and I will be making 3 blankets, each in a different yarn weight (and therefore a different size). You can find more details about that below.
“But it’s Square!”
If you don’t like the idea of a square blanket, don’t fret. We will be supplying optional extra squares for those of you who wish to make the blanket rectangular. On top of that I will do a post that will give you the tools to “grow” your blanket yourself, should you wish to make it even bigger.
Yarns, Colours, and Yardages
Below you will find the size and total yardage details for the 3 different yarn weights (or sizes), as well as a list of the colours I intend to use for each one. Which colours and how many colours you choose to use is totally up to you.
A – Worsted Weight Yarn (Large Blanket)
This will be a nice big blanket. Not as big as a queen size bed, but certainly big enough to cover me from my head to my toes. I will be using 10 colours for this version and it will be the most subdued of the three.
Please Note: There are 2 weights of Stonewashed. I am using the Stonewashed XL, not the regular Stonewashed!
Yarn: Scheepjeswol Stonewashed XL
Yarn Weight: Worsted Weight (#4)
Hook Size: 5.5 mm hook (US I/9 UK 5) – I use, and LOVE, Clover Amour Crochet Hooks
Yardage: 3900 meters (4265 yards)
Finished Size: 1.8 meters x 1.8 meters (6′ x 6′)
Colours: Moon Stone (841), Amazonite (853), Green Agate (855), Blue Apatite (845), Canada Jade (846), Lemon Quartz (852), Deep Amethyst (851), Garnet (850), Corundum Ruby (848), Coral (856). (See below for amounts)
B – Double Knit Yarn (Lapghan)
This will yield a lovely lapghan-sized blanket. I am using 11 shades for this one and it will be quite the colour explosion!
Yarn: Scheepjeswol Softfun
Yarn Weight: Double knit (#3)
Hook Size: 4 mm hook (US G/6 UK 8) – I use, and LOVE, Clover Amour Crochet Hooks
Yardage: 3300 meters (approx. 3600 yards)
Finished Size: 1.4 meters x 1.4 meters (4’7 x 4’7)
Colours: Canary (2518), Light Rose (2513), Rose (2514), Bordeaux (2492), Cyclamen (2534), Olive (2531), Dark Turquoise (2511), Light Blue (2432), Pink (2480), Heath (2493), Violet (2519). (See below for amounts)
C – 4 Ply Yarn (Baby Blanket)
This is the perfect size for a baby blanket. I will be using 11 glorious shades for this small version.
Yarn: Scheepjeswol Cotton 8
Yarn Weight: 4 Ply (#2)
Hook Size: 3 mm hook (UK 11) or 3.25 (US D/3 UK 10) – I use, and LOVE, Clover Amour Crochet Hooks
Yardage: 2500 meters (approx. 2730 yards)
Finished Size: 1.0 meters x 1.0 meters (3’3 x 3’3)
Colours: Canary (714), Light Pink (718), Fuchsia (720), Dark Pink (719), Moors (726), Light Green (642), Turquoise (712), Light Turquoise (622), Violet (529), Heath (721), Light Purple (651). (See below for amounts)
Update: I have had quite a few questions about how many skeins/balls of each colour I will be using. Please note that I have not made all 3 blankets yet, so these predictions are only that: predictions! Nevertheless, you will probably find it useful to know which colours I intend to use more than others, so here goes:

I am very excited about this project and cannot wait for the CAL to start. Are you in?
This blog post contains affiliate links. I only link to products I personally use or would use. All opinions are my own.
Charne Gooch says
Hmmm I think maybe I`ll wait a bit to see a picture or two before deciding to join in. My question is `how will I know how to use my colours if I have no idea what I`m shooting for` Waiting is fine though….no problem :)
Dedri Uys says
Charne, you won’t be left completely in the dark, but if you are at all concerned, you might benefit from hanging back a little bit. It IS a huge undertaking.
Charne Gooch says
okey dokey…I’ll see how long I am able to wait :D ….I’m going to the wool shop on Thursday though hehehehehe I was thinking that I may just keep the colours simple/few…that may help. I’ll go ‘sit on my hands’ so they don’t get too itchy! LOL
Carolyn says
So excited! Can hardly wait! I think,,,even if I could not crochet,,, I would love reading your blog!
Dedri Uys says
Aww…thank you :)
Robin says
Oh my gosh, I am so excited to hear that this is a continuous project…I really think I will do better with this for my first cal.
I’m excited and yet afraid to start, lol!
Dedri Uys says
Don’t be afraid!!
Vandana says
I stay in India, hence require to order wool through local vendor. So, can you mail me requrements in terms of gms, instead of yardage. We get hanks of 3 ply, 4 ply. As i plan to follow you for the 1.4 by 1.4 lap afghan. Please help.
Dedri Uys says
Vandana, it will be impossible to predict how many grams you should be getting without knowing how many meters are in a gram or exactly what thickness of yarn you are talking about. When you say 3 ply or 4 ply, do you mean double knit and worsted weight?
Ania says
Happy dedrie in this New Year 2015 Performance .Zdrowia and dreams. Dear dedrie can not miss the opportunity to participate in this challenge . As far as I can ? I would love to Compete however I have no chance to purchase these yarns . Could you ask for it saw on the links that I set (which would be a better selection of yarn and the color of it ) and I would have to buy the original with you to take part in this challenge? :) I would like to take a big blanket.

Hi…
I cannot understand a word of the details about the yarn on that site. Can you maybe ask on Official CCC Social Group if there is anyone who understands Polish and English and can help me understand more about those yarns?
Lorraine Cooper says
Happy new year to you all from Victoria Point, Qld, Australia. To health, happiness and plenty of crochet.
I am interested in signing up for the CAL. I Had my heart set on Sophie’s Garden but I noticed it’s a finished event, is it still possible to make it. Have wool can start immediately!
Dedri Uys says
Lorraine, the pattern for Sophie’s Garden is available on my website. It wasn’t a crochet-along, just a 4-part pattern. You can find all the links to make SGM HERE. Have fun and a happy new year to you too!
Mary says
I’m so looking forward to this, my first CAL!
I think I may try to use the large blanket colors to make the lapghan. Should work?
Also wondering if there are any US equivalents to the Scheepjeswol Softfun or Stonewashed (in case I decide to make the larger blanket after all)?
Thank you!
Dedri Uys says
Mary, there will be only one pattern. The finished size will depend on which yarn you choose to use, is all. Scheepjeswol has the stonewashed XL and a standard stonewashed. The “stonewashed xl” is worsted weight (they say it’s bulky) and the “stonewashed” is 4-ply (the same thickness as the cotton 8 and half the thickness of the softfun). So if you used the standard stonewashed, not the XL, you will get a baby-sized blanket.
I do not know of any US yarns that have the same texture/colours as the Scheepjeswol, sorry. But any worsted weight (#4) or double knit (#3) will do.
Cathi says
Mary, you can order Scheeps in the USS through Deramores too! Google Deramores and when you get the page, look on the top left and change location to US. I have ordered from them before. Excellent service and they quickly respond to email communications too!
Gaye says
Looking forward to being part of this CAL. Have just bravely made my first yarn order from the other side (end!?!) of the globe…..my New Years gift to myself! Six colours on back order but I’m sure they’ll arrive as soon as they can. Thank you for providing such a wonderful learning opportunity for all of us.
Warmest (because it is about 35 degrees Celsius and 95% humidity here today!) regards from
Wellington Point, Queensland, Australia
xx
Gaye
Dedri Uys says
Great to hear, Gaye. I have some on backorder as well, so let’s hope we are both lucky!

Sheila Atcher says
Hooray! I am using Stylecraft DK. Can’t wait to start…hoping to eventually have a king-size blankie out of it. :)
Thanks for sharing your wonderful talents! Happy New Year!
Dedri Uys says
Happy New Year to you too, Sheila
Carrie says
Yay, I’m super excited! Hope I can actually participate in this one, here’s to hoping! ;)
I think I missed it in the post (sorry!) but who disigned the blanket? You and Kimberly together? :) And I just want to thank uou one last time for all you did in the 2014 CAL, I know it wasn’t easy!
Merry (late) Christmas and have a wonderful new year!
Dedri Uys says
Hi Carrie. Season’s wishes to you too!
I am designing it, but Kim is giving a lot of help/input. It would be so nice if you did participate in this one :)
Sherry says
Hello I would love to do the large blanket. Is it true that you need 23 skeins of the main color? and how many grams per skein? or how many yards of each color? I am a little confused about how much yarn to have for the project.
Thanks
Dedri Uys says
Sherry, if you have a look at the post again you will see that I list the total yardage for each of the 3 sizes. I will be using 23 skeins of the main colour for the large, but only because I choose to make it predominantly cream (or moonstone). The skeins I will be using are tiny, though. You can get as many colours as you would like, as long as the total yardage of your skeins is more than the suggested yardage for the blanket (keeping in mind that you won’t use every single scrap of every colour).
The other 2 versions will have a more balance amount of each colour (in other words I will be using equal amounts of each colour and double the amount of the main/background colour, which is a light blue in those two instances).
I hope that makes sense.
maritere says
es sencillamente maravillosa :)
Michelle Mitchell says
Wow… is that really 53 skeins for the large blanket?
Dedri Uys says
Yes. The skeins/balls are 50 g each and only have 75 meter each (which is just under 80 yards). If you use a different worsted weight yarn, your total amount of skeins will depend on meters/yards per that specific brand’s skeins.
Paula Wetzel says
Do you really think you’ll be using 23 skeins of moonstone in the stonewash xl? Just curious if that might be a typo; it seems like a lot more yarn than the other two (although I know it’s a bigger blanket).
Paula Wetzel says
Oh, never mind. I just did the math and I guess that’s right! :) Those must be small skeins.
Dedri Uys says
Definitely 23 x 50g skeins (75 meters per skein). The large one will be predominantly moonstone whereas the others will have a more even distribution of colours.
Mandy says
is the amount of yarn correct,23 balls of the stonewashed XL,moon stone?seems rather a lot compared to the other amount required.
Dedri Uys says
Yup. 23 x 50 g skeins (75 meters each).
Marla says
so 1725 m. moonstone. Um it says it is 14stitches to the inch (bulky?) how is it turning out? I am super excited to see what yours looks like with predominantly one neutral colour. I am tempted to try that too but love the vibrant colours in your other gardens. Sophie’s Universe. I love the name!!!
Dedri Uys says
Marla, just less than half the yarn I have ordered (and will be using) is moonstone. I have asked Scheepjeswol about the fact that it says “bulky”, because it is working up to the same size as the DROPS Paris Cotton and the Deborah Norville Everyday (both of which are worsted weight yarns). It yields a slightly more dense fabric, but not significantly larger…
Laura says
23 x stonewashed moon stone?
Heather Knotek smith says
I was wondering if that may be a typo too. Is it? I do really want to purchase that yarn but I already have a bunch of cotton 8 so I’m going with that.
Thanks for all your work.
Heather Knotek smith says
I’m sorry. I kept reading down and saw all the discussion. I need to get on at deramores and see if I can even order that much they seemed to be pretty back ordered.
Dedri Uys says
No worries :)
lisa p says
Hi. This sounds so fun! I have lots of random worsted yarn inherited from my grandmother.. Do you think this would work as a stash buster type project?
Dedri Uys says
Lisa, I am fairly confident that you can use any colours under the sun!
lorrie says
23 balls of moonstone xl?
Debbie Reese says
I am so anxious to start buy I’ll be good and wait. :-) I would, however, love to order my yarn. I’m looking at the large (worsted) and am on Deramores website. The Scheepjeswol XL states bulky not worsted. Is that what you figured? Should we ordered equal amounts of each color to total 3900 meters? Thanks!
Dedri Uys says
Debbie, the colours are up to you. At the bottom of the post I have supplied the amounts that I will be getting, but my blanket will be predominantly moonstone. You can get however much you want. The only suggestion I can give you is that you will need at least 6 skeins of Canada Jade for all the “leaf” rounds.
Bridget says
I’m excited! Your colors are beautiful!!
Dedri Uys says
Thank you, Bridget!
