Save the Date: Charotte’s Universe CAL 2021

I am so so SO excited to announce that I will be releasing the pattern for Charlotte’s Universe (aka #simplycharlotte) as a 12-week crochet-along later this year.

Charlotte has been on my hook and in my heart for the last 5 years.  (YES, that is how long it has taken me to finish this design.)  When I started designing her, I was firm on two points:  I wanted to work on her ONLY as a reward to myself and as a joy project (so no forcing things to happen), and I wanted the process to be organic and spontaneous (and fun!).

On our journey, we have gone to the Netherlands (three times), South Africa, Devon, Dorset, Cornwall, New Zealand, Australia…

We have attended VERY cold Rugby matches, spent countless hours on the tube, lived in 4 different places…

We went through medical procedures and pandemic chaos and losses and hospital visits…

We made many MANY friends…

So Charlotte is very dear to my heart.

But also, if you have been following me for a while, you will know that I am moved and motivated by being part of people’s stories and that I get huge amounts of joy from the fact that crochet can distract and uplift us when we need a bit of caring-for.  Already, just through sharing this design with my testers, I feel a sense of awe and gratitude.  Every time they reach out to me with an excited ‘Look At What I Made!’ my heart swells!

I will be publishing the Information Post on the 4th of July (that’s where I will tell you all about colourways, yarn packs, materials, size, etc).  The CAL will start on the 1st of August 2021, and it will run for 12 weeks.  Hopefully, those four weeks will give you enough time to choose, order, and receive your yarn.   If you’re using stash yarn, the wait might feel a bit long, but don’t worry. I’ve created a colouring-in template that you can play with while you wait for the CAL to start.

Charlotte features my favourite elements from Sophie, and let me tell you, it is more tricky to get the maths to work for an existing element than to just make it up as you go along!

But I have a not-so-baby sister and we are the same and different in so many ways.  I wanted Sophie and Charlotte to have that same kinship – I wanted them to remind you of each other, but when you looked closer, I wanted you to be able to recognise the differences that made then shine in their own right.  Oh, sappy sappy Dedri!

My favourite bits of the blanket are the Flower Arches…

… and the Corner Flowers.

Esther Dijkstra will once again be doing video tutorials for us, so if you have any concerns about complexity or your skill level, don’t worry!!!  She’s got you covered.

I will be doing photo tutorials – it remains to be seen how detailed they will be, but my wonderful team of testers are managing without any photos, so I have every confidence that you’ll be able to do this one.

New and very exciting is the fact that Masako Kawahara from Crochet Hmmm has done round-by-round charts for this project.  I am SO excited bout the charts.  They are beautiful!  She has even managed to chart the roses from Sophie!!!

And that is about all I am going to say for now, because I have a birthday to celebrate!

  1. One more day to wait,then I can order my wool for this up and coming beautiful CAL.
    I started crochet with Sophie’s Universe Cal and at times wondered what I didn’t just start with a granny blanket lol, but I completed it, quite a few errors and a lot of frogging lol and not in the colours I would choose now but I was so chuffed with myself when I finished. The next was was the Ubuntu and now can’t wait for for Charlotte, Dedri you truly are a marvel thank you for all you’ve taught your followers especially me

  4. Oh gosh I can hardly wait! Loved Sophie’s Universe, made one in aran and gifted it to a nursing school friend as a wedding gift. Making another as we speak in Paintbox dusty rose. Totally addicted to single color right now. Hmm? What color to do Charlotte in?? Thinking a nice soft blue… to be continued…

  5. Dedri, will you also include an option, advise or some suggestions for changing Carlotte into a rectangle? Hope to work on Charlotte with yarn from my stach.

    • No plans for a rectangular Charlotte’s Universe as yet, Adele.
      You will hear it here first of it ever comes about though!

  7. I absolutely LOVE all of your work.
    People think I’m clever when I have completed Sophie’s Universe …….. but it is YOU who is so clever and talented.
    Now, i need to finish Ubuntu before 1st August. Being in a winter lockdown again due to Covid ought to help.
    Thank you for creating such wonderful patterns, and for sharing your stories in life.

  8. I’m very excited about this CAL. Quick question. Will the original block be part of the CAL, or only the addition? In other words, should I have Charlotte square ready to go at the beginning of the CAL? Thank you!

    • Hi Katie. The CAL starts at the very beginning of Charlotte, so if you make one in advance, you will have some waiting before the CAL catches up with you.
      The choice is yours, though.

  12. I’m almost done with my first Sophie and, as I too have a younger sister, was thinking of making one for her too. But, I wanted to do something a bit different. Charlotte is the perfect project to make this happen! So excited to start!!

  15. Oh this is amazing!! I said I wasn’t going to take on any more projects until my current ….. 5 + …. are finished, but I can bend the rules right? It’s Finished 5 different projects PER medium!? haha This looks amazing Dedri! I can’t wait! Your patterns always soothe my soul!

    bin am Überlegen, die Decke ist ein Wahnsinn, aber ob ich das schaffe?

    Alleine das Mittelteil ist ein so tolles Teil, davon träume ich! Auch für neue Überzüge meiner Eckbankgruppe geeignet, oder gar als Gardine?

  19. Happy birthday and congratulations! I’m a massive Sophie fan and recommend her to everyone. Best learner’s pattern bar none for me. I am super excited for this, if anything it’s even more beautiful! Is there any hope of Charlotte being published in the near future, like the Sophie pattern book?
