Hello. Having done a lot of reading and looking at your gorgeous and inspirational work, I’m ready to start using up my oddments accumulated over many years by making one of your beautiful designs (probably Sophie’s Garden) but can you please advise if your patterns are in English or American terminology (I suspect USA) but please confirm. Thanks in advance. Keep up the good work.
Kindest regards and warm wishes
Wendy Avila (UK)
Dedri Uys says
Hi Wendy. My patterns are in US terms. For each of my patterns you will find a note just below the heading ‘Abbreviations’. It will tell you if a specific pattern is written in US or UK. Just in case you have the same query for any other patterns. I use US exclusively, unless I have been specifically commissioned to use UK (usually books or magazines).

Hi Dedri
Your work is amazing and reading your posts and the pictures from your trip to South Africa has really brought back great memories and I have missed Africa. I love your Namaqualand square which can be enlarged into a blanket. Are we going to be able to purchase the pattern here in the UK. Look forward to hearing from you. Thank you again for sharing your lovely creations with us
Dedri Uys says
Hi Nicole.
The pattern is exclusive to Be Inspired until next year. After that it will be available in the UK.

Welcome home from your journey to south Africa. I have made 3 to date Sophies, but my favorite one I entered into a local Fair here in Washington State, USA. I won a Blue Ribbon! I wanted to send you a picture of it, but don’t really know how. But thank you for your wonderful design.
Dedri Uys says
Hi Barb. Congratulations! You can either tag me on social media, or email me using the ‘Contact Me’ tab at the top of this site.

Hi Dedri
On Saturday evening, with glass of Pinot Noir on my little side table, I finished the last row of Sophies Universe. I am a self-taught hooker, but one who creates other things in-between and then returns to crocheting. Your beautiful pattern has stirred up a passion in me that I felt envious of others that had it. Crochet is now my absolute favourite form of creativity!! I made this for my mother for Christmas who will be visiting us here in New Zealand from South Africa.
I cannot thank you enough for sharing your talent with us, for inspiring and motivating no only myself, but an entire hooking community!!
I sincerely hope that one day you will make your way over to New Zealand and will hold some workshops here. You know where to find me, should the urge grab lol.
I am sad that she is finished, I feel sure I will make another, and I also feel sure that no.2 will not be the last ;)
Thank you, from the bottom of my heart.
Kind regards
Maxine xx
Dedri Uys says
Hi Maxine. Thank you for your lovely comment. I don’t know when or if I will ever get to New Zealand. My sister lives there and I would LOVE to visit her, so you never know…
Amelia says
Hi I am interested in attending the crochet workshop in Durban, please could you advise dates….
Dedri Uys says
Hi Amelia. These workshops ran from end of July to beginning of August. I am sorry you missed them. Maybe Be Inspired has some other workshops you might be interested in? They are based in Durban.
Caroline Botes says
Hello. I was at the Be Inspired Johannesburg morning. I bought the Namaqualand Shawl pack with the Invicta yarn. Just to make sure, must I use a double thread or single For this pattern. Thanks.
Dedri Uys says
Hi Caroline. Single thread :) Can you remember if your tension was much different from mine? I can check for you, but I’d have to go through 250 flowers to find yours!! If your tension was much looser, you can go down a hook size.
Mandy Squire says
Hi, I can’t seem to download part 3 or 4 of Sophie’s Universe. Have you taken them down for some reason maybe?
Dedri Uys says
Hi Mandy. We had some issues with the website, but it is back up and running again now, so you will be able to access those parts.

Hi Dedri, would so love to make a crochet blanket as in Sophies Universe CAL. Is there a CAL starting this year 2 0 1 6 ??
Dedri Uys says
Hi :) I am not hosting a CAL this year, but there are at least 15 others being hosted (that I know of).
Carol D says
If you want to do the Sophie’s Universe, you can always get the patterns for all the “Parts” on this website. There is not an ongoing CAL for this now, but you can still follow the pattern from Part 1 forward. It’s great fun to do Sophie! I miss doing this one…few patterns have inspired me as this one did. I learned so much while doing Sophie! And Sophie remains my favorite crochet accomplishment to date! Dedri makes it easy to follow along – and unless you are an expert “hooker”, you, too, will learn so much doing this one…and it will give you confidence to tackle more difficult projects after doing Sophie!
Lana says
Hello.. Thanks for your tutorial on the crochet rug. I recently made a circle rug with only doublecrochets however end up seeing a line where I start every circle with the chain 2 as my first DC.. Would you have any tips on how to fix that? My initial problem what that starting with 2dc in the same..would raise the rug at that part. I took it off then redid it with only 1dc to start the round (which is the first chain 2) and there’s now a very obvious line. Would be happy to send you pics so you could take a look! Thanks! I had sent you a msg earlier and thought I’d post on your comment box too. .. Hope that’s okay
Dedri Uys says
Hi Lana, I didn’t see your previous message. I would be happy to take a look for you. Please use the contact me tab just below my header to send me a message. I will then respond, which will allow you to send me emails.
Thank you

I thank you and await your response . att ..
Dedri Uys says
Hi Vivian. I don’t understand which pattern you are looking for. Do you have the name of the bag?
shelley says
Hi I am looking for a bandana pattern for teens I cannot find one anywhere I am making them for a special needs home thank you I appreciate it very much if you could help me out.. I would like it so I can print the pattern off my printer easily..
shelley
Dedri Uys says
Shelley, the tutorial doesn’t contain a printed pattern, just instructions for making your own pattern. You can easily adapt the size by using a newspaper instead of regular paper, and just drawing it out bigger. You really can make them as big or as small as you want, providing that the top of the pattern (that will go around the neck) is wide enough.
Ginny Barefoot says
Dedri, I cannot tell you how much I have enjoyed this Sophies Universe. You are wonderful to share your gifts with the whole world…what an accomplishment…people from all over the world together participating in making something beautiful. Thank you so much for allowing me to participate.
Tana says
Dedri, I cam accross your blog about 8 or nine months ago. I was just getting interested in crocheting. I enjoyed making a few afghans but the back and forth if the same stitch got menotonous. That is when I found you as I was browsing the Internet for something more interesting. I started doing the block a week just for fun, not intending to make anything with them, using yarn I had around the house. I was basically learning how to crochet as I went. Your instructions were great. After several squares I asked my daughter if she would like an afghan made out of the squares… She loved the idea. She is 18 and getting ready to go off to collage away from home. She wanted a smaller version. So I made 26 of my favorites from the block a week. I used different colors. Well I just finished the whole project ending with “Betty’s Beautiful Boarder”. This is going with my daughter when she goes off to college. It is absolutely beautiful. I wanted to that you for your blog and for your perfect instructions. You have helped me, not only learn to crchet, but helped me to make and heirloom, and a piece of me and of home to send away with my daughter. I am so proud of what I have made. I wanted to send you a picture, but don’t see a way to do that.
Thanks so very much!
Jenny says
Hello Tana!
What a super keepsake for your daughter to have with her at college!
I still haven’t finished my 2014 CAL blocks! I got wrapped up in Sophie’s Universe (have you thought of trying her yet?)!
The best way to show us a picture is to find us on Facebook as we have a Lookatwhatimade page where you can chat and post us some photographs :)

How do I get to your personal website and tutorials? I have read and read and can’t find them. I am absolutely in love with this Sophie’s cal, the most fun work I have done in crochet and you make it so easy to understand. How many more weeks of Sophie is left? I’m finishing up 9 now, got. Behind, went skiing. Thank you so much and look forward to more of your patterns. Lana Connelly ponca city oklahoma

The site is this site. You have actually found it, and I am a little confused how you can’t find the patterns as they are all here via the home page :)

I saw on one of your posts that you are testing your mandala pattern. I’d love to help if you need more testers. I do a lot of proof reading at work so I’m good at noticing statements that could be confusing. I have some stylecraft clasique cotton and some cantania cotton just waiting on a surface stitch mandala pattern I purchased. I’m thinking it may be a bit much for my first.
We’ll let me know if you need more. I’m Heather Knotek Smith on Facebook.
Dedri Uys says
Thank you once again for testing for me, Heather x
Candace says
I just wanted to drop you a line to say thank you for your website. My 9 year old daughter is learning to crochet and your tutorials have been a great help to us. She cannot wait until she can make items like yours. You inspire the both of us. Thank you again for giving her inspiration and me the ability to teach her.
Dedri Uys says
Hi Candace. I’ve just realized that a couple of my replies never actually posted. Sorry about that. Your message made my day! This is exactly why I do these tutorials/patterns…to help people develop a passion for the craft. I am so excited about the fact that you and your daughter are both benefitting. I would love to see one of her finished objects at some point. The youngest girl that has made something from one of my patterns so far is 11 and she did an amazing cushion cover using the ten-stitch blanket pattern. But your daughter could be my new record-setter ;)
Take care!
